Is that combo a good path? I love to write and give my opinion about topics, but I didn't want to major in English seeing as I don't want to be a teacher or an author. I've been interested in psychology since middle school but I seem to have a natural knack for writing and I could get a stable income and easily enjoy what I'm doing if I go into journalism. I know journalism is a liberal arts major, but is it an easy career to get started in?

No, it’s a very difficult career to get started in. You have to really want it, and unless you have some really good connections thanks to family/friends or really generous professors, you’ll probably face a lot of rejection. And the pay isn’t great, at least not to start with, unless you’re business savvy and can market yourself well as a freelancer.

That being said, pairing it with psychology could definitely open doors. Science writing generally offers better pay than run of the mill general interest writing. I would say go for it; even if it doesn’t work out, you can spin a journalism major with a psych minor to open many other doors.

Are you in college yet? If so, I would try talking to a professor in the journalism department, preferably one that has science writing experience. Even a professor in the psych department might be able to help you get a better idea of where this path may take you. They can also show you other paths that might become better options for your interests, talents, and goals in the future.

Good luck! Stick with it, if you love it, but definitely give it a try, no matter what others say, if you think you might be interested in it.

Oh! Have you ever read Psychology Today? It can be hard to find, but it’s a GREAT magazine. Sort of psych for the everyman magazine. Try looking in big bookstores.

Ah shucks. Well, I should have known better than to think I’d be able to waltz in a newspaper or magazine company and get a job with the snap of my fingers.

I’m going to be a senior in high school next month but I’d love to be in college already. I wanted to write about local, national, and international news but that may be a pipedream for someone that’s fresh out of college.

I’ve read Psychology Today and really enjoyed it. I wouldn’t mind writing for a magazine like that. Thanks for the reply!
