I'm pretty certain I want to go into print journalism as a career (with a focus on editing), but I feel like I'm limiting myself to some great schools if I only apply to those that have a journalism program. Currently I'm looking seriously at UNC-Chapel Hill (in-state), Syracuse, and American University (hoping for some merit aid from the last two). I'd love to go to a LAC, but very few of them offer any type of communication study as an undergraduate major. I'm also interested in French, political science, and linguistics.

What are some other paths I could take for a career in journalism besides a major in undergrad school?

Maybe an english major or a lit major...look...if you really wanna do this, you should major in journalsim. There are more school than those three. If you want GREAT journalism programs look at

1st- Northwestern, Syracuse, USC
2nd- Univeristy of Missouri, UNC-Chapel Hill
3rd-Wisconsin, Ohio U, Arizona State

See, I'd loooove more than anything to go to Northwestern, but I don't want to end up $100,000 in debt after undergrad school. I wouldn't qualify for tons of finaid, so I was looking at schools like Syracuse and AU in the hopes that they'd give me merit aid (I know Northwestern wouldn't).

Look at University of Missouri (Mizzou). It's the 2nd best j-school after Northwestern. IMO if you want to go into journalism, I'd definately apply to USC, UNC, or UT Austin which are all very good j-schools but are also good in other fields.

I am going into the field of broadcat journalism.......you can major in anything you want as an under grad....just as long as you go to grad school for journalism.....thats what many journalists do!! But if you do apply to j-school i would apply to schools that are good in general b/c if you change majors you want a school that is goo d for it al...Northwestern, USC, Syracuse are all GREAT!

Really? I've met many journalists at the Houston Chronicle who have all told me that going to grad school is a waste of money when you can learn how to write by taking up internships... and writing for smaller publications. Most recommended me to either minor or major in journalism with an emphasis in something else.

Look through old course catalogs for LACs. There could be plenty of journalism related courses in other disciplines, esp. courses that are going to really refine your writing. There's a lot of opportunities to get really involved with campus newspapers, and even doing some more freelance work for local publications at any school (esp. top LACs and universities)....

Honestly, also consider NYU-- they have journalism, communications, and all of the resources NYC has to offer.

Northwestern and Syracuse are the best two schools in the nation for journalism. Go to either one of those schools and you will be well on your way. Although, if cost is an issue then I would recommend looking at other, more inexpensive schools like UNC.
