Where do you think the best schools for journalism are?

I know Northwestern...but I doubt I can get in there. Also, University of Oregon...but I'm not sure if I would want to live in the town it is located in.

University of Missouri - Columbia is typically considered to be the best journalism school, of course many people may also disagree with this statement.

check out the awards section at the society of pro journalists website, www.spj.org. That will give you a good overview of the better programs. On the East Coast if you have the money Syracuse is the place to go.

Northwestern seems to be the #1 school from what i hear, but as far as I know, UF has consistently ranked within the top 5 for quite a while. Their school of communications is one of the main reasons that I decided to stay in Fla., and not transfer out of state. Most of the other schools in Fla., either don't have a very good program or they don't have a program at all. If you're really serious about the best and have the money, definately Columbia, however I would hold off that until you're ready for graduate and doctoral work. Just my two pennies.

"I've been looking at Syracuse and I like what I see.... and easier to get admitted than Northwestern."

Actually, the Journalism school at Syracuse is a a little bit harder to get in than the university itself. Average GPA for a Newhouse (SU Journalism School) freshman this year was 3.9, and SATs were in the 13ish range.

syracuse
nyu
columbia for grad school
northwestern
missouri-columbia
university of maryland college park
usc
are the " name droppers" other schools w/ good programs are Elon, Pepperdine, UArizona, etc. :)

The mean SAT I for Northwestern freshmen this year was 1402. Traditionally, Medill's average is about the same (slightly higher verbal and slightly lower math) as university's average.

I was wondering about Northwestern - I'm really interested in journalism as a career, but was never on the high school paper or anything like that (no time when I'm cramming APs into my schedule!). As far as admitting people into the journalism school, are they more interested in stats or extracurriculars that show a prior interest in the career?

how does it work when it comes to being admitted to the northwestern journalism school? Do you apply to hte university and THEN apply to the journalism school, or do you get into both, or do you wait a year after going to northwestern and then go into the journalism school. I am also interested in majoring in english, so could I do that while attending the journalism school?

You apply to the journalism school directly if you want to major in journalism. It's difficult to transfer into Medill or add journalism as a second major. However, the reverse is easy.

Medill students complete at least 45 courses for a bachelor of science in journalism degree. Thirty-three courses must be in areas outside journalism......Given the flexibility of the Medill curriculum, many Medill undergraduates complete a second major or a minor in the Weinberg College. Popular subjects for a second major or minor include political science, sociology, history, international studies, English, gender studies and economics.

You do not have to have journalism related ECs. But since you will be competing with many who do, you probably want to get 700+ on verbal and writing to stay competitive. Essays (NU doesn't use common application) are very important in NU admission.

So if I apply to Northwestern (journalism school) I either get into the journalism program AND Northwestern, or I am completely rejected from the University?
