"I want to major in communications/journalism, with maybe a minor in music."

You should look at Indiana. They have a very good music program, and the j-school is a top 10. I believe the music school is quite competitive though.

Only because you chose such pretigious schools, USC would in the bottom half of that list, but in terms of which has the best programs for both (best in music, 2nd in journalism with Berkeley behind NW, and 1st in Comm), USC is your place. As both programs are so intense though, I'm not sure what the feasibility of double-majoring in both would be.

yeah, I'm trying to find one or two more privates to apply to (usc and stanford are for sures...) but I want to find something that's a little more of a match and less of a reach. I don't know much about the other schools outside of CA so it's difficult for me to gauge which are more likely to accept me.

Note that communication and journalism at Northwestern belong to two separate schools. You probably need to find out what exactly you want. They are different things at Northwestern. The music school at NU, if I am not mistaken, is conservatory type.

I can't speak for schools other than Syracuse, but I do know that Syracuse has a very strong program in Journalism (think Ted Keppel and Bob Costas etc.) and have a decent program in music performance.
