I was accepted as a communication major, but missed out on my first choice major, journalism, because I had over 36 credits. Pretty bummed, I didn't really want to major in communications. What do current students think of USC Communications and is it worth transferring for?

is that how it works? i’m a transfer with over 36 credits, applied for broadcast journalism, and got the same major as you. i thought you just had to be on campus for a little while before you applied to journalism?? are you sure about this??

As did I. Apparently if you have over 36 credits or have gone to school at another university for two years then you can’t apply for broadcast or print journalism. Pretty disappointing- I know you can still take print and broadcast journalism classes as a communications major, but it’s not the same thing. Are you still going to transfer as a communications major?

i can’t open that for some reason. but, that being said, how is it possible that they wouldn’t take someone as a transfer into the journalism program? i mean, does that even make sense.

They do, but the journalism major is a three year program, so only students who have completed one year of college are eligible. Students transferring after two years are only able to transfer into communications or public relations.

If you want to be a journalist then I’m not sure it’s worth transferring. I can think of two possible options, contact the Journalism program and make it clear that you will only transfer <36 credits. This may require you to stay an extra semester or two, but would seemingly allow you to study what you want to study.

The other option would be to get your degree in Communications and then apply to Masters programs in journalism.
