Journalism

Hey!!
Are any teens on here planning to become journalists?

It seems like i'm the only one, I have yet to meet any others.

I do…definitely free-lance. i don’t think i could stand being a legit journalist…It also doesn’t help that journalism is sort of on a decline.

Nope. I used to reeeeally want to be a journalist, but then I realized I hate deadlines. Also the pay sucks. And hours too.

I used to be a big math/sci guy until middle school when i stopped doing that… I think I could’ve been good like a lot of other asians, but for some reason I started to like writing. A friend got me into writing about the seattle mariners a year ago, and ever since I’ve been developing as a sportswriter. I was really happy when I won a gold key in journalism RAL for a sports piece I wrote in a few hours on postmark date. I don’t think I’ll become a journalist because it’s not really the job I envision myself doing, but definitely a satisfying hobby right now. Now what’s even rarer is an asian sportswriter… few and far between :D

^^^
Journalism as a whole is not on a decline; Print journalism is.

^^
If you hate deadlines how can you survive highschool? lolz

^
I seriously think that any place would hire an Asian sports journalist. That is rare and it would bring a lot of diversity.

lol I just to be one but then I changed my mind

I did really well, made EIC, and now I make the deadlines :D

I am really interested in journalism (news and features writing) but I’m unsure about whether I want to become an actual journalist. Personally, I think it is great that you want to become one.

Our idea of what it means to be a journalist is about to get turned on its head. Planning to be a journalist now seems to me a bit like planning to be a monk because you like copying books right as the printing press was invented. (Never mind the fact that being a monk entails much more than copying books.)

^
That reason alone is why there will be a whole new bunch of journalism jobs in the future. If the monks still wanted to write then somebody else had to stand up and get the printing press working. That somebody else will be the future j-school grads.

My best friend and I wanted to be Journalists really badly… Until like last month ■■■■■. We promised we would go to the same college and study Journalism and crap. Well, now she wants to be an occupational therapist and I want to be an environmental lawyer. We’re still awesome friends though. xD

I’m flirting with the idea right now. As far as journalism go for me. . .it could be broadcast journalism, written journalism, or photojournalism. . .

(For now, I am a sports broadcaster in radio in UCSB. . .)

Isn’t high school journalism stupid?

^ Take that back! Don’t make generalizations when there are several amazing journalism classes out of the many high schools in the world. Sure, there may be poor ones, but I doubt they’re “stupid.”

Isn’t Saugus a clueless airhead?

^^^ Not at all. If you have good writers and teen who are serious then you will have a grea school paper!!!
My school refuses to let students have one. I used to do it when we had one, but not any longer.

Actually Blackrose, after attending a prestigious journalism camp this past summer, i can safely tell you, that based on the impressions i was getting, Journalism as a whole is declining. The industry itself is shrinking. I’m not going to argue with you over this since if you decide that this isn’t true, that’s your opinion.

^
okay, it is just that after speaking to some journalists in my community and her on CC because that was my main concern, they told me that print will die soon. But people will always need information brought to them, either through the TV, internet, their phones facebook whatever. People will forever want to know what is going on around them.

That is just what I think.

But i’m not here to argue lolz.

I just want to know if there are any more people on here who wnat to be journalists?
Our whole world can not only be made up of science and math people.

Saugus, my school newspaper is better than both our local papers and our patch site.

That’s true, but it’s unbelievably more efficient to “journalize” through TV and internet than through the newspaper. Print Journalism requires much more actual Journalists than Broadcast Journalism. Print Journalism is declining at a point in which the rise in Broadcast Journalism isn’t making up for it.

So yes, overall, Journalism is declining. But there are still great opportunities to make a great career out of it. However, you should definitely be mindful of where you plan to head as a Journalist.
