Journalism

Does anyone know of schools with good journalism programs?

columbia has one of the best grad journalism programs. nyu is strong too.

For undergrad, Syracuse (Newhouse), University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, Northwestern (Medill), and University of Missouri at Columbia are all supposed to be excellent.

USC and Northwestern both have great schools of journalism.

I'm under the impression that American University also has a pretty good school of Journalism. I mean shouldn't they?

I've also heard about Columbia and Northwestern.

Graduate:
Columbia
UC Berkeley

Undergraduate Schools:
NYU
Northwestern - Medill
American U
George Washington U
U of Southern California
Syracuse U
Washington & Lee

the Newhouse School @ Syracuse, hands down. :-)

does anyone know about journalism salaries? not that good..?

I've just been accepted to Medill at Northwestern. I visited the school last March and was, overall, very impressed with the program, the campus, the fairly suburban setting, and the student body. I have honestly never heard one bad thing about the Northwestern journalism program. It's awesome. I would definitely look into it as a transfer (because the deadline's passed for RD, I think). Um... I heard Syracuse has a good program but the weather and the city sucks. NYU and American are okay, but they have a poor job placement program. I've never heard much about Chapel Hill, but a lot of people have recommended it to me, along with Berkley, ASU, and Mizzou for undergrad. National rankings have placed Northwestern, Mizzou, and Columbia at the top three for the past few years. From what I hear, Northwestern is better for broadcast and Mizzou is better for print, but while Mizzou is compiled of a supposed mediocre student body, Northwestern ranked #1 in Princton Review for academics, period.

Northwestern is supposed to be great. I haven't heard exclusively good things about it, though. My friend their has complaints- it is not flawless, RHandscom.

there's nothing undergrad for journalism at Columbia?

I heard that journalists barely earn enough to make a living. In fact, here is a excerp from bls. "Salaries for news analysts, reporters, and correspondents vary widely. Median annual earnings of reporters and correspondents were $31,320 in May 2004. The middle 50 percent earned between $22,900 and $47,860. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $18,470, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $68,250. Median annual earnings of reporters and correspondents were $30,070 in newspaper, periodical, book, and directory publishers and $34,050 in radio and television broadcasting."
So this is one of the lowest paid professions in the United States. Don't do journalism, it is not a good investent in terms of future earnings.

Don't major in journalism, most employers actually prefer an undergraduate liberal arts degree to a journalism one. Save it for grad school.
