Anyone just complete a journalism internship, or considering one next summer? Any thoughts/ideas you'd like to share? I applied for the Newsweek summer program and was rejected, but I hope to reapply this upcoming fall/winter.

Heh. Journalism internships are really tough to come by at big name places. Are you mostly looking into magazines? I was on my college paper awhile and seriously, people would submit like 30 applications to papers all across the country in the fall. And then they end up in places like Wichita and Richmond (which I'm sure have great papers, but it's not exactly the New York Times or even San Jose Mercury)

Start smaller, especially if you don't have a lot of experience yet. Work at a local paper maybe?

I agree with sweetdreams. Try your local paper before reaching out to the big ones. It's also very important that you are writing for your school paper, so you can at least have clips from that. I just landed an internship at a major magazine, and I don't know if I would have gotten it if I didn't have clips to showcase my writing.

Not me, but I have a friend who writes for the San Jose Mercury. {or she wrote. she had her articles published and she was a 2006 senior}

Definitely write for your school newspaper, and try your local newspapers first. Work your way up and don't try to just jump. If you do, that's great, but I still suggest going for your local newspapers first. I mean, Newsweek is a pretty big name magazine.
