Journalism

I am thinking about not applying to Tisch and applying as a general journalism major because strategically I think it'll work out for me (i.e. getting admission for general but not Tisch.)
Anyone here know anyone who is a journalism major and either went through Tisch (I want to be a broadcast journalist) or went through the general journalism (college of arts & sciences) track?

Any help would be great :)

I can't exactly answer your question as I don't go to NYU but I do work for a major network in broadcasting. NONE of our on air people were actors. Study journalism plus history, poly sci, and economics. Do stories for the newspaper and TV station if NYU has one. Spend summers at any little local station that will get you experience.

Catherine-
What exactly do you do in your news network? (i.e. talent, producer, etc. etc.)
Tisch is very unclear to me and I'm trying to find some better answers- some people say its good for on-air talent, others say its production/film based.

Thank you for your feedback!

Carebear, Tisch has nothing to do with the journalism program at NYU. Tisch is for drama, dramatic writing, dance, photography, film/tv, etc. Journalism is in the College of Arts and Sciences, and Communications is in Steinhardt.

Alwaysamom- So even if I want to specify in broadcast journalism, I should still w/ college of arts and sciences and not pursue Tisch?

As I said, Tisch has nothing to do with journalism. You'd have to apply to CAS for the journalism program. There's a broadcast journalism concentration within the journalism department. I'd recommend you have a look at the CAS journalism website and it should answer any questions you may have. I'm still not understanding why Tisch is even an issue here. :)

I agree with always a mom. Go for journalism, take classes in broadcast jounalism, and also "know your stuff" - i.e. keep up to date with politics, etc. Most importantly get some work experience and have a reel - even if you make it yourself - of your work. Networks and local stations (where you will likely be starting) don't have time to train you - they want someone who can do the job. They don't particularly care where you went to college - they want you to be a good writer, good speaker and know how to put together a story. You have many years ahead of you to learn this.

what's the difference between journalism at cas and communications studies at steinhardt?

This is the lone frustration I have with NYU, separate schools that you are basically stuck in once admitted. It does cut down on people that apply for a major that's easy to get accepted into, then switching to what they really wanted. But if you are undecided, what's up with that? Go liberal Arts like CAS, and find out you really would enjoy business or acting????

yeah, if you were applying as a "general journalism major" you would be applying to CAS, and thus tisch would be out of the running, since you can only apply to one school...if you decided to pursue a different major in tisch, you would have to apply for an internal transfer between schools once admitted and attending NYU
