Journalists? (and a politics question)

FSU is one of my choices for college, and I am pretty sure I have what it takes to get in, but I noticed they do not have a Journalism major but they do have a student newspaper and a communications major. Would that set me up all right if I want to be a journalist?

Also, I might want to major in political science. I was wondering, with FSU being in the state capitol, is it any better for that? Do they have a strong program?

edit:
ANOTHER QUESTION!
Is FSU better than UM? I have heard FSU is very liberal arts, and that is what I am looking for. My parents work at UM and are constantly telling me that FSU is ranked way lower, but UM is only really good for kids that want to be a doctor or lawyer. That's clearly not where my interests lie. Also, I looked around the web and a lot of lists say FSU is higher than UM. I'm just wondering what's the deal, and if anyone could show me a reliable list that ranks the Florida schools maybe?

If your parents work at UM, they may qualify for free (or steeply discounted) tuition for their dependents. I know several UM employees that qualify for this tuition break They sent their kids to other U’s that have entered into a reciprocity agreement with UM.

It is very likely that my son will end up at FSU, for creative writing. But, if he was interested in Journalism, he would not go to FSU. In the absence of a J major, it would not make sense. UF has a top ranked J school. Dig deeper and find the right school for you.

I would get free tuition at UM, if I get in. But I don’t really like the school and my brother goes there and is very unhappy there. So as far as a fit, FSU looks better.

UF is my top choice, I would love to go there, but I highly doubt I’ll be accepted. Their admissions is just so random and with no rhyme or reason that I don’t want to get my hopes up or set my sights on it. And like I said, UM is good for science. Even though they have a journalism major, their program is really not good at all.

Yet I don’t know if I necessarily want to major in journalism, I would like to do something maybe history or english-oriented, and double major political science.

Do yourself a favor and investigate your parents’ benefits. It is very possible that you could go out of state for free. That being said, FSU is a good choice, if you want History or English.

Well, my parents have never mentioned going out of state for free. UM is strict with their tuition remission rules. There was some talk where the board mentioned paying for a child to go to a different school, but I think that is only if you’re rejected from UM.

So FSU is good for english and history? I also like political science, and it might be a good area to start studying politics in. I just talked to my mom about it and she said it’s definitely an option, we’ll tour it beginning of the school year. I think people underestimate FSU a lot of the time. And I also think that in maybe about 10 years or so, FSU will be as selective and highly ranked as UF.

I too think there are those who underestimate Florida State, but usually they are from competing schools. FSU probably has the [best political science program](<a href=“Rankings | Florida State University”>Rankings | Florida State University) in Florida, certainly the [highest rated per US News](http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-political-science-schools/rankings/page+2).

FSU would be an excellent choice for English or History.

I think FSU is a much better educational value than UM. UM is a fine school, but it is expensive and limited. FSU is much more comprehensive research university.

Hmm that definitely helps me, thank you so much!

Agreed, UM is a great place for law and medical school, and engineering is good too, but I am very much a liberal arts kid with more writing skills. And I do get it for free because my parents are working there, but I don’t see myself being happy there, plus I might not even get in.

Per US News FSU Law is neck and neck with UF Law for the best law school in Florida. Miami is third in Florida in that ranking.
