Jr year visits

Will be visiting colleges next week and would like some information- anyone have information on McDaniel, Hood College, George Mason, Un of Md- Baltimore County (UMBC), Goucher and Towson. My D has an UW GPA of about 3.6 (3.8 if you count academic electives like journalism and creative writing). Mostly Honors with some AP classes. SAT 540M and 570V. She was disappointed in the scores and has a goal of 600 in math and verbal. I think she will do it.
Her EC's are fine- some leadership and community stuff. All EC's relate to her current planned major English and Education. She is the editor of the Lit Magazine. Volunteer tutor and on the Library Student Board.

These schools seem to be within her range - no real reaches I think. We are still looking at large vs small vs medium she does want to be near a city or a small town. We have visited some of these schools but are more serious on this trip.

Tom - You may want to add Loyola MD to the list as it's just a mile or two south of Towson.

I am in MD and attended both Towson and UMBC back before the earth cooled. I know more abut UMBC than the other schools you mentioned because I know current students there. It is wonderful for math and sciences. Most students do not live on campus, but there are plenty of activities for the residential students according to the kids I know. Towson is large with several high rise dorms right in the heart of Towson. Goucher is about 1 mile north of Towson, very small, totally different than Towson or UMBC. Mc Daniel is the small town of Westminster about 30 minutes northwest of Balto, very liberal arts. Hood is still mostly women and education is its' strength. If I can be further help, just PM me.

If your daughter is interested in English and writing you might want to look at Washington College about 90 minutes from Baltimore. They have a wonderful English dept and The Sophie Kerr award for one talented senior every year.

If your daughter would be willing to go a bit farther away but wants to stay in Maryland, how about Frostburg or Salisbury? From what I hear, both have less of a "commuter school" feel than UMBC or Towson.

Tom-

Has she taken the SAT only once? Encourage her to retake 2 more times, and do some prep for the test. And...has she taken the ACT? Some students do better on one test than the other.

mafool- she has taken the SAT only once. She will take it again in June. She does not plan to take the ACT but that may change. Her current scores are in the 25-75% range for the schools she is looking at. Although with the increase in applicants at all the schools that may change. She is also looking at schools in NJ and Pa. She may look at some in NC and Mass. also

George Mason is also a "commuter college" / "suitcase school" ... so if she's looking for a more traditional college experience, I'd steer clear!

May I suggest St. Mary's College of Maryland? It's a public honors college and has a lovely campus on the water in St. Mary's County.

Kelly

The D of a good friend went to College of Notre Dame in Baltimore (it's up north near a couple of other colleges). All women, and she absolutely blossomed. Had good grades, good SAT scores, and they turned her into a leader and a star. A very nurturing place. She started all four years in her Div III sport, graduated summa cum laude, and has done quite well for herself in the financial industry in Baltimore.
