JSA - Freshman Scholars at Princeton

Hello -

I am hoping an ALUM of the JSA-Freshman Scholars can give our family some advice.

My dd who is in 8th grade - 13 years old has done many summer academic programs. she has gone to Concordia Language villages for years. She has participated in BROWN'S SPARK program in Astrobiology. She has done STEM at the United States Naval Academy.

Next year she REALLY wants to do something with gov't, speech / debate, writing etc.... Although she LOVES math, engineering, architecture and science her ABSOLUTE PASSION is politics, writing, gov't etc.... she is an avid reader, writer and historian.

We are having a hard time trying to find a program for this upcoming (2010) summer that meets these interests. I have come across the JSA - Freshman Scholars at Princeton. However, I am a bit weary because of the price.

She is young (rising 9th grader) so it is a wierd age to find things of this magnitude for. She is quite a precocious individual. She is part of JHU-CTY. (although she has never gone to their summer program !) She has taken her SAT's and been honored with "high scores". (better than 80 % of high school seniors - but taking it as a 7th grader) etc.
She is self motivated. She is passionate. She loves learning.

So - what are the thoughts on this program ?
Is it quality ?
Do you know of any OUTSTANDING programs for rising 9th graders ?

Thanks in advanced,
ELG

BUMPING this as I am looking for programs for 9th grader as well

I’m in the process of founding a JSA chapter at my school. I can’t say whether or not the Princeton course is particularly rigorous, prestigious, etc…I haven’t actually attended, but I will say that the entire JSA program looks to be very well organized and interesting as a whole. Furthermore, JSA offers opportunities for students to gain distinction at the regional and national level. That’s a pretty big plus, I’d say.

But it’s your call, and you’d probably be better served hearing from someone who has actually attended the program.
