JSA Summer School

I recently received information about the JSA Summer School and am thinking of applying to the Yale session. Is it worth it? Is it helpful in regard to an application to a competitive university? Any information regarding such will be appreciated.

It's a great opportunity. I would've definitely tried out for it if my school had started a JSA before this year. (I'm a senior.) I've been lectured about it by a summer school alum at both of the JSA conventions I've gone to. lol

I personally would have chosen the Georgetown location, because of its location and the fact that students get to meet politicians.

Plus, the idea of taking AP U.S. Gov't with a university professor at Georgetown (or whichever school you choose) and possibly getting a teacher recommendation out of them seems like it would be a good complement to one's application.

Do you have to be in JSA to apply for this program?

You do not have to be in JSA at your school. I attended JSA two years ago and my school did not have a chapter nor did they ask about it on the application. However, after completing the summer school, they do try to get you to start a chapter. Helpful to an application? No more than any other program. I suppose if you have a passion for politics/government it will show through to your professors if you decide to request a letter of recommendation. The program, I would say, is worthwhile

Is the Georgetown location the best?

yeah g-town is supposedly the best, but i had a great time at stanford.

I mentioned Yale earlier because that is where I really want to go to college. I thought that attending a program there would help my chances. Any thoughts?

I got a package in the mail from them the other day. I think I will go read it right now hah. It did look pretty spendy though and I don't have any open time in my summer :(

bump........

No summer program will automatically increase your college chances, I dont suppose. However, I would be willing to say if you did significantly well and asked for a letter of recommendation, it would add to your college application.

Thanks guys, I think I'm going to do it. Anyone else going to Yale this summer?

do you have AIM?

no, but I have MSN Messenger. My name is TromboneHr.

oh. I dont have that. sorry.

My best friend went to the Yale program two summers ago and she loved it. She loved learning at an acclerated level, and meeting all the new friends she met. She didn't love the lack of sleep though, lol.

What did she say about the classes? I take it from the sleep comment that they are rather demanding?

Is any going to the Princeton program? Hey how did you pay for your summer program? I'm going to guage my eyes out trying to fundraise the money :( but I know it will be worth it!

Im going to Princeon this year. I have to send in the money though.

Everyone I know who has been to JSA summer school loved it. I wish I could've went but I never got the opportunity. I'm in the regular JSA program and I LOVE it.

As for how it looks on college apps, my friend got into G'town and they sent him a letter later saying how they were particularly impressed with the part of his application where he mentioned he was in the JSA.

Also, all three officers in my chapter of the JSA were accepted into their first choice schools this year (Georgetown, Princeton and Washington & Lee) and I even wrote my college essay about JSA elections. It's a fantastic experience and will be what I miss most about high school.
