Judge my chances please

Hi all,

I am an International student, currently studying 12th Grade in the United Arab Emirates in a school which follows Indian curriculum CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education).

I just wanted to know what my chances are in getting admission into Boston University for Aeronautical Engineering.

I dont have GPA grading in my school. The grading is purely based on marks obtained:
9th - 85%
10th - 90%
11th - 80%

If my school was giving GPA grading then my grading MIGHT (coz there is not accurate grading for the Indian curriculum) look like this:-
9th – 3.7+ / 4.0 (coz I got A’s in all my subjects)
10th – 3.7/4.0+ (coz I got A’s in all my subjects)
11th – 3.2-3.4 / 4.0 (coz I got a few A’s and a few B’s)

I had also recieved a half-fee scholarship in grade 11.

ACTIVITIES :
I have been selected to attend the Global Young Leaders’ Conference (GYLC) in Washington/New York this year.
Swimming
Singing
Made Robot for science exhibition
Created a presentation on the periodic table
Helped the team in coming 3rd in an inter-school robot competition
Part of the school Anti-Smoking Committee
I have been learning Indian Carnatic Music vocal for over 10 years and have give a 2 and half hour concert. I have also been learning Carnatic Music violin for over 3 years.

SAT SCORES:
MATH - 700
CR - 600
Planning to give it again to improve my score (hopefully 1350+).

Going to give SAT II’s in November. Will get above 750 in maths, physics and chemistry.

Teacher Recommendations will be really good. Not sure what the school counsellor will write (but got info from previous school mates in US universities that we usually get really good recs).

Am going to start working on the essays when the apps are released and HOPEFULLY they should be good.

Responses will also be accepted for these universities as well UMich Ann Arbor, UVA, UIUC, UCLA, University of Notre Dame, Cornell and Penn State.

Anyway, how is Boston University for Aeronautical Engineering.

Will appreciate all responses. good as well as bad.

Thanks all.

your grades look good and your activities show that you are interested in engineering. i say that you have a great chance to get into bu eng. the aerospace department at bu is paired up with the mechanical dept. aerospace has probably one of the fewest number of students because it is so specific. most people opt to go into mechanical because it leaves many doors open. like other engineering schools, aerospace is not easy but if you are willing to work hard, bu is a nice place to go. in my opinion, our engineering does have recognition but lacks when compared to powerhouses, umich, uiuc, and cornell.

I agree that your chances are good.

My name might be different coz i lost my password and had to create a new account.

I wanted to know the following as well :

1)I wanted to know whether the degree Mechanical & Aeronautical Engineering specified by BU is one degree or a dual degree.
Because if it is not a dual degree then i thougt of doing it with Electrical & Computer Engineering or if the work load was too heavy then only Electrical Engineering.

2)I also wanted to know whether any one had stats of the number of ppl who apply to BU for M&A Engineering.
Does BU accept students as per what engineering they choose or not.

3) Are there any honors programs available for engineering and if there is can i apply for it

bump bump
bump

will my chances reduce if my grade 12 GPA was around 2.8 (the indian system of education sucksssssssss).

bump bump ----

bump bump 10 chars

Please stop bumping this thread. The bumping is selfish and stupid so I'm going to respond in that spirit: have you bothered to look online for Engineering's Bulletin or do you want someone to do your research for you? How is an American student or parent going to know about Indian grades? You might think to ask someone in India.

I am guessing you are bumping it because you are anxious and worried about the process. Unfortunately you didn't get a huge number of responses becuase its info we cannot give you because we do not know the answers.

I would recommend you contact the international students center/liaison at BU and try to get some specific advice. There are manay internationals at BU and a large number that are graded within the Indian system so they probably know how it works. There is also an International Forum on CC but I think your best bet is to email BU directly. That way you can establish a relationship with some one there that can help you through this process. Do not worry. It will all work out.

You can also go on LIVEJOURNAL, BUNITE and ask specifically for advice from current students that from the Emerites and India. Good luck and keep us posted.

Also, on the BU web site or BUTODAY, where the colleges like Engineering (ENG) are listed on the right --thats where you'll find some specifics about that program. No one here knows that. You can also check the Honors Program on BU's web site. My understanding is that you do not apply to it as a Freshman---they invite you if you are in the top 10% range of admitted students.

dogs has given good info. Let me add that if you are going to get 2.8 in the 12th grade, I assume that it is the midyear grade you are talking about, have your guidance counselor explain the reason for that - e.g., if it is due to illness. (I am not sure why you blame the Indian educational system for falling behind in 12th grade, however.) Your 9 - 11 grades seem to be competitive for admission to a lot of US schools.
