Juilliard Acceptance/Teacher Assignment

Okay…so I received an acceptance letter for my Bachelor of Music program for piano performance earlier today. I’m accepted, but have no idea who my teacher will be (the acceptance letter literally reads that the school is unable to confirm a studio assignment, that the admissions office is working closely with faculty to make an assignment, etc.). Can anyone tell me what this means? Are the teachers I listed not interested in me, or is this just a normal thing?

I would think it most likely means that the professors you selected as preferences don’t have room in their studios, and so you will be assigned to another member of faculty instead. But the faculty clearly liked you, otherwise they wouldn’t admit you! Finding places in studios is a frequent problem at schools of this level.

Congrats!

Just call admissions and ask for a clarification.

@seongjincho : I’m pretty sure @Senior2016M is right about the situation you are in.
If you have a preferred professor, write them or call them (if possible) to put your case out, and also to check where they stand wrt room in their studio. It is possible that not all of the acceptances they put out for their studios will be taken up - the student may simply decide to go to a different school. Show the professor how interested you are in their studio. If you are in fact assigned a different professor, make sure you talk to that person, take a class in the next month - the other professor may be just as good, but not someone you’ve heard of.

This happened to us a couple of years ago, (not at Juilliard though), but persistence with the professor pays off, and the “replacement” professor was someone that my S liked a lot and could have worked with, but the preferred prof came through on April 27th or so, a couple of days before decision time.

Have you had any direct interaction with your preferred teacher(s) and asked if they have room in their studio for you? My D contacted the teacher to ask if they have room. Once the agreement has been reached between studio and student, the department will generally approve.

In my d’s experience at Juilliard, she waited a few weeks after admission notice for her teacher assignment - but did get her #1 choice. She wound up going to NEC instead , where she also waited a few weeks after admissions for studio assignment and also got her #1 at that school.
