bluepearl - Having gone thru the rejection from Juilliard earlier this year with my son, I know the disappointment. The truth is, there are MANY very talented musicians who don’t get into Juilliard. Looking at the list of schools your daughter has been accepted at, she can hold her head very high. I’m sure you will help her through her disappointment and remind her of the amazing schools she has to choose from.

Thanks, Pukadad. She does have other good options and we’re still waiting to hear from a couple of places. She’ll be ok.
And oh yes! Congrats to EW and EW’s mon!

EW- congrats to your D!!
Bluepearl, your D has acceptances at some first-rate schools and should be very proud of herself. Who knows what they were looking for at Julliard with regard to violinists? We’re all seeing kids getting thumbs up from top schools while not even passing the pre-screening at others, it’s subjective; if our kids wanted quantifiers, they’d take up ski racing!

Congratulations to EW! I’m a vocal performance major at Juilliard right now, so contact me if you have any questions or anything! Congrats again!

Bluepearl, my son was also rejected on violin, even though he is in the Juilliard precollege program. We heard they only accepted 10 undergrad violinists this year and that it was tighter than usual because Joel Smirnoff is leaving for CIM, and the rest of the studios have to take over some of his students. Your daughter has lots of good options! My son will probably take a gap year and try again next year.

Stringkeymom, we had also heard Juilliard was accepting only 10 undergrad violins, so I asked specifically at the parent information meeting and was told 31,“no, I’m sorry, I mean 51” and I wish I had questioned him more, because 51 seemed like way too many. However, you may be right–10 undergrads, maybe 21 grads? That makes me feel better, anyway. My daughter definitely won’t take a gap year. She’ll get over her disappointment eventually and pick a school where she will be happy.
Mezzo’sMama, you are right, and who knows what they look for in auditions.

Congratulations to EW. Julliard is a great school.

But realize Bluepearl, not every Nobel prizewinner went to Harvard, Yale or Princeton. Not every great musician went to Julliard or Curtis. IU can boast Joshua Bell, e.g. I understand that CIM only took 8-10 undergrad violins last year. It happens sometimes…

Your daughter has a lot of very great choices and she obviously has a bright future wherever she goes.

Bluepearl, what day were you there? I think I was at that meeting. I’ve heard subsequently (from the mother of an admitted student) that the total number of violinists admitted was 20 (10 grad, 10 undergrad). I know of at least 2 that came out of the precollege program.

Phase 2: Your daughter should have an exciting few weeks coming up in making her decisions! Best wishes to you.

We were at Juilliard on Thursday, March 5. My daughter knows of 2 violinists admitted who are NOT in the precollege program–so your 2 and our 2 is 4 of 10 of the undergrad admits. I wonder if they have a wait list and if so, how many are on it.

Bluepearl, we were there on Thursday, March 5 also. You sat ahead of me in the meeting and I heard you ask the question. I asked the question about the challenges of double majoring as my son does violin and composition in the precollege division.

We know of one other violinist from Temple Prep who was admitted. We know many who were rejected, including most of DS’s friends from this part of the world. If you want, PM me and we can gossip about studios.

1 of the students from Walnut hill school got in for violin…another was waitlisted…only took 10 undergrads this year because one of the teachers is going to CIM so the other teachers have to take over kids from that studio…at least what DD told me last night
