Anyone with previous experience.
What do we(as an Ivy swim recruit) expect from July 1?
Do coaches call on July 1 for the swimmers too, just like any other sports?
If they call you on 2nd, 3rd, or a week after, does it mean anything, like they are not that much interested in you?
Who is the one usually calling you, head coach or assistant coach? Does it make any difference?
Thank you for answering my questions in advance.

A few coaches (including Ivy coaches) have emailed to tell S that they will be calling on July 1st. Some other Ivy coaches asked when would be a good time to call on July 1st. Some just indicated that they are excited that July 1st is approaching.

Depending on your desirability to a coach, expect some calls on or around July 1st. Since my sport is Track and Field, it was usually the coach that specialized in my event that called. And just because a coach may call a week or 2 weeks after July 1st doesn’t mean that they’re not really interested in you!

We were told by a coach at a camp 2 weeks ago that “July 1st is the date things really start hopping” so to please make sure we have as much information in to them as possible as soon as we can.

Although, technically, July 1 (and 2 and 3) are also the dates for New England Elite (football) when our son and many hundreds of other fine players across the country who attend will clearly be fairly occupied, so really we are not sure what to expect. Including the holiday, who knows, maybe it’s more like July 5th.

My kid was at dev. camp last year on July 1 and witnessed the rising seniors receiving lots of calls on their cells. I don’t think a busy athletic schedule will preclude those calls.

Does anybody have any idea what they are calling about? Is it just to say hello and get to know each other better to make final decision about offering OV( and accepting)?
Someone said their kids got offered OV on July 1.

Coaches who call recruits at 12:01 AM (for example – and I’ve heard of this happening) on July 1 invariably do so to offer an OV. Most D1 coaches already have a pretty good idea whom they intend to invite for an OV, at least their first wave of invitations.

Hi OP have read both of your threads.

Don’t read too much into July 1…
There are only 24 hrs in a day…

Some may call that day. Some may not.

Some will call asking for those transcripts-- in that they have seen you or your times and now need the academic stuff from you.
Some will call to say how they hope their school is on your list and that you will come for a visit.
Some may not call at all because they already have your stuff and they plan on having you pre-read when they meet with admissions.

OV dates for HYP cannot happen until the coaches get the pre-reads done by admissions cmte.

By now you should have your stats/academic transcript and test scores on hand in a admissions/coach readable format/copes of score reports etc. Be sure to fax/email/carrier pigeon send them to the coaches you (you are the student?) …have already been sending intro emails to for the last 6 months so that everyone has everything now.

For HYP you need top athletic stats, top GPA, and top scores…meaning above 700 on each section etc.

Every sport and coach are different. I’ve heard from a few top recruits who didn’t receive any July phone calls at all, but still ended up with multiple OVs and offers.

Thank you, h2ocows, fogfog and sherpa trying to clarify for me. I am a parent without any experience on this recruit thing, learning a lot from everybody here.

Fogfog, although you are really always on the mark and I have learned a ton from you guys (I read this site daily), I just don’t want parents of kids who play sports like lacrosse, football and hockey to get too freaked out about the 700 mark on tests. I am not even going on what coaches have told us, but by my son’s classmates, several of whom have already gone Ivy on 1800s and 1900s and mid 3’s for gpas. And, I mean, they are students there right now. If you are a player high enough on their recruiting list, they don’t need 700s. They sure don’t hurt, but don’t let not having them scare you off of giving the coaches the scores and letting them make the decision. It doesn’t hurt to pass your information by.

^ Right Ginger. It may vary by sport. It also varies by school. Kids who can get into Cornell, Penn or Brown - those stats won’t fly at HYP.

We have several coaches who emailed to S that they would call on July 1. Some of them are among his top choices.
They all have his academic papers including SATs and transcript.
If they don’t initiate OV, do you think he can ask them about OVs?

Yes, I think it’s always smart to be as direct and specific as possible. This is especially true with OV’s since there are only a limited number you can take, and earlier OV’s can lead to earlier likelies (in the case of Ivies), so you want to ask the top choice schools before accepting OV’s from too many other less favorite schools that might offer them.

As an aside, it’s possible for coaches to set up OV’s by email or by athletes calling coaches before July 1. It looks to us like the coaches in top programs in our kid’s sport begin to schedule their top recruits’ official visits in June. I suspect each sport handles this a bit differently, but I don’t see anything in NCAA rules prohibiting coaches from setting up OV’s before July 1 as long as they’re not calling the athletes to do it.

I found this document a helpful outline of what is and isn’t allowed, broken down by sport and division. http://www.aaaa-sa.org/College%20PDF/NCAA%20Recruiting%20Regulations.pdf

Thanks, Classical.

<those stats="" won’t="" fly="" at="" hyp=""></those>

Not to put too fine a point on it, because in large part you are right, but one of the kids we know is there on football and another one on hockey. One did not break 1800 (really, i am not kidding) and the other did not break 2000 and they are both at HYP. The others (about four more I can count over the years) are indeed at the other ivies. It does happen. It’s still there plotted on Naviance scattergrams for the two HYPs and our school.

Just saying, let the coach decide. Worst that can happen is that your scores together with your ability simply get no interest. We decidedly do not have 700s. It may bear out that you are right in our case, we’ll just have to see.

swimHYP

S is a swimmer and received calls from several Ivy coaches on or immediately after July 1 last summer. If your S receives a call from a coach during the first few days of July it is a near certainty that he will be offered an OV. The OV invite may not be offered during the call but may come later.

I can only speak for non helmet sports and the recruiting packages our K1 got from HYP (is at Y)

and all of the recruiting class that year was well above 2100 etc.

Somewhere on the ath recr board people have ranked the difficulty of admission to the ivies–which varies

As far as July 1 calls etc…we are going through this again with K2 and a coach recently sent a great email…

Hi there xyz,

We are now on the verge of July - the time when coaches can call prospects as they rise in to their senior year. Of course you were always free and able to call a coach at any time - but on July 1st we can now call you (at least those coaches that are restricted to follow NCAA rules for their men’s rowing programs).

Tip #1 - What if your phone doesn’t ring on July 1st? Have your dreams of varsity competition been crushed? Things to consider - many coaches don’t even recruit using the phone at all. It is just a plain and simple fact that emailing is both easier for you and coaches alike and also doesn’t cause any scheduling conflicts. Case in point the best time for me to call you is during office hours. What if you are working this summer? What if the best time for you is the evening? No good for me - I’m running around
At ABC U we have xyz student-athletes joining us for the upcoming season and not one of them received a call from me. That doesn’t mean to say I or a member of staff didn’t make calls. It is just an interesting fact that the strongest relationships forged through the recruiting process last year for us, as recognized by the people electing to come here, were built on a combination of emailing and visits - …

Coach

Thanks for sharing that, fogfog … There are some really good posts today!

Yes, thank you, Classical. Printed it out so I can make sure we stay on the right side of NCAA:)
