July 1

Thank you for your posting, fogfog.

So July 1 has come and gone - no reports?

DS got two phone calls - good calls, very positive; he was however, disappointed he did not hear from his top two choices (despite both previously saying he was at top of their lists). However, he received an email from one saying that NCAA rules had a new stipulation that coaches can not call until after the last camp activity of any camp any prospect is attending. Since he does not know the activities of every camp that every prospect is attending he said that he therefore would call no one, and that S should not read anything into that. Anyone ever heard of that new rule? Coach also said he prefers email anyway, and he is meeting S unofficially in a couple of weeks.

As for OVs - both calls said that OVs would be determined in 2-4 weeks, after pre-reads are complete and each said that DS was in their top tier for that.

Still hoping for more communication and calls. I know that still everything can happen, but both coaches that called referenced the magic of July 1st, and I do think getting a call or not getting a call sends a signal (even if it was not meant to). Even so - here we go…

Hi Rowmom, I’m sorry I actually buried the news we had at the end of the “now that it’s over” thread. We had a NESCAC slot offer for football today in the form of a phone call this morning from the head coach that was repeated at camp today.

As for the rule on coaches not calling until after the “last camp activity of any camp any prospect is attending,” I think it means that technically coaches are not supposed to recruit during “camps” which I think are technically not even supposed to be called “camps” or “recruiting camps.” Instead, they call them junior days, prospect days, clinics, and they take pains to emphasize this. NE Elite for example made sure to say “because this is a clinic and NOT a camp” in their materials.

And, coaches are not technically permitted to “recruit” during “clinics” but a player can “say hello” to a coach anytime during the day and they do say “please wait to speak to coaches until after camp ends.” So I think they mean - coaches can’t call or recruit literally during camp hours. As soon as the whistle blows on the “last activity” however, the clinic is “over” and that’s when the unofficial handshaking begins.

This is why I’ve even heard that sometimes after a “clinic” players and parents will leave campus for an hour, then come back to campus and then their “OV” can start with different rules. It’s definitely a game.

Son definitely talked to some coaches today at Elite and some kids were already coming up with offers and commitments. As for other phone calls, he said his phone died on the way to camp and it’s been dead since. He has no idea if anyone else called.

Edited to add: read your post again that it was an email from a coach. I also don’t get that since we haven’t even planned what further camps we might be attending at individual college campuses later in July. With that logic no one’s going to call until potentially the 2nd week of August. I had not heard of that rule. I know kids are getting offers now. At least in football and at least at the Patriot and NESCAC levels. Don’t know about Ivy.

Rowmom,
My youngest daughter is a rower and attending a JRNT camp. The NCAA rule that states coaches cannot call while a rower is at camp is true, but the athlete can call the coach anytime. Email is still good, but I think you’re right. Many coaches are not calling until after camps are over - which is, in n most rowing cases, July 15 after Club Nationals.

otoh Kids at camps like JRNT etc are being seen by top coaches daily and have a leg up on any other student-athletes not at the camp. Many of those coaches are scooping out prospects and building relationships. So be sure your kid is being looked at every second.

also–I obviously edited out things from that letter from the coach to k2 to maintain k2s privacey

Just wanted to post and share … On the flip side of the July 1st date regarding coach interest, we had a head coach call and give us the heads up that they have decided they do not project they will continue to recruit our player. It was an Ivy and it was already in our super reach pile not necessarily so much for academics but just because we knew at the start he was an outlier for height for his position for Ivies. Those are the breaks.

It’s still all good, though, since he has been performing really well at all camps, and several other perfectly great schools where his height isn’t an issue at all have now picked up interest in him. Anyway just wanted to share that I actually thought it was thoughtful of this coach to let us know. So much more courteous than just dropping off the face of the planet!

^ That was very nice of the coach.

K2 has gotten one letter from a coach sayin unless a certain stat hits a mark…its a not go.

otoh a school that wasn’t on the list–the coach both called and emailed K2 asking for a transcript and scores.

Casting a wide net is so important.

fogfog, absolutely 100%. We had already felt from the camp that the interest was all from the attending coaches and not from the hosting Ivy. So it was all OK. We didn’t feel a strong pull at the school either, although it was a really pleasant camp day. Lots of shade and breeze and good music. The school puts on a good camp.

And, onward! :)

Now I am convinced one should not read into calls or lack thereof. DS received a long, detailed email today advising that he will soon receive an actual paper letter that will detail an official visit this fall. He did not receive a call July 1st or after, and in fact had not heard from this school for a month, except a ‘canned’ update. We feel it is somewhat of an athletic reach, although a solid academic match. Just trying to roll with it…

Rowmom, congrats on the letter. That’s great news!!

Just to provide some info for future readers, here is a recap of what happened on July 1st for S (some context – S is a junior nats top 8 finalist with senior nat cuts and 225-230 academic index).

The phone calls began at 8:30am and lasted till about 8pm. Some coaches talked for about 10 min, some a lot longer so there might be a total of 18 calls. S was at practices from 8-10am and then 12-2pm so we handled the calls during that time.

About 1/5 of the coaches called during the appointed time (they emailed first to schedule a time to talk). The earlier calls were from top D1 schools and major Ivies. There were a few calls from mid range D1 schools but they came on July 2.

In terms of content of the conversations, for those coaches who have been in communication with S, it was more of the reiteration of their interest in him and how he will benefit from their schools. Nothing new really came from the phone calls, it’s more like they had to call because everyone was calling. For new ones, they said they would like to get to know S better and if S sees a fit, please respond to their emails etc. for those who have already invited S for OVs, they stated the times again and said they would finalize via emails. All said they would call again next week.

Observations: most calls were from schools where S has shown an interest by responding to their earlier emails. The July 1 calls were not really substantive or informative, but more of a “let’s get to know each other better over time” message. Some coaches were so much better at this and kept the conversations much more lively, while others were just not good at this. But this does not really reflect the fit between the athlete and the school. Finally, some head coaches made the calls, while others had their specialty coach (e.g., distant, sprint) make the calls.

Hope this is somewhat helpful.

Holy wow, 5am riser … I love posts like this. Honest and truly informative. You guys must have been so excited. July 1st was not the “day” I thought it would be but we are chugging along. 18 calls, though … Just, wow. Had no idea.

Wow 18 calls is amazing! So what I’m gathering from this is that some coaches may call at a later date than July 1?

Yes. Some coaches also emailed to say that they would call after the week of July 1st. Personally, I really think the number of calls is not important, you just want your top 5 to contact you in some way.

We actually were told at camp not to expect contact … they were going on coach vacation. July is apparently the only time many of them get to take off work. They get through the camps and then they need time out.
