July 2?????????

Why do Ithacans celebrate the Fourth of July on July 2? It just doesn't make sense...
Anyone have an explanation?

i was not aware. what does the celebration consist of?

That might explain why my calls go unanswered…
How’d you find out?

Was there a fireworks display? It usually costs more to have a display on the actual 4th because of supply and demand. The folks who construct and run those shows can’t be everywhere at once, so they charge more on the day that everyone wants them and less on other days.

Many smaller communities with less money have their shows on a day other than the 4th. That’s my guess.

I am here for Summer College, and we had a fireworks display on July 2. It was kinda strange, since everyone from CUSC and Ithaca gathered on Libe Slope to watch fireworks that were to the right and in the trees. I couldn’t see too well, but it was still fun. On the Fourth, CUSC at a mini-carnival, but no fireworks.

The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.
