I’m currently a sophomore taking Geometry, and hope to do A2 next year. If I AM in “A” algebra, is AP to Big a jump? If so (and I think it would probably be) is 3 years, not 4 of math a deal breaker for moderately selective schools?
AP statistics covers similar material as a semester long college statistics course for those not in math-heavy majors; prerequisite for the college course or AP course is typically algebra 2. So that should not be a problem.
However, if your intended major in college requires calculus, it is better to take precalculus after algebra 2 so that you are not behind in math when you enter college.
Thanks! I’m planning on Area and/or Ethnic Studies. I’ve been previously advised here that Stats is more applicable than calculus. Is that big a level jump possible?
Algebra 2 to AP Stats is not a big jump.
I worry about only being in “A” level. (Level below Honors) but thanks for reassuring me Algebra II to Stats is doable.
Algebra 2 to AP statistics or college introductory (non-calculus-based) statistics is a normal progression.
Statistics is generally more applicable for any kind of social science, although heavy statistical analysis in social sciences (more commonly at the graduate level) can find calculus-based statistics helpful.
In terms of 4 years if you are doing algebra 1, geometry, algebra 2 and stats that may be enough for many schools. Some schools may want precalculus not stats especially for stem majors. In my high school stats is an elective only and doesn’t count towards one of the 4 math classes needed to graduate high school. That is school specific though so it might be fine for your high school.
My daughter took pre- calc and AP stats sophomore year.
@Mjkacmom did she double up? Or was it precalc as a frosh?
@momtogirls2 I’m gearing towards Area/Ethnic Studies and Foreign Language as my major. I’m the LEAST STEM person out there.
Yes, it is possible to take both precalculus and AP statistics in the same year after completing algebra 2. Neither depends on the other, although both have algebra 2 as a prerequisite.
She doubled up, she actually loved statistics and now wants to go to college preparing for a career in actuarial science. AB calc junior year, BC senior.
Because I’m not hugely math inclined, I’ll just hope I can get to Honors Algebra II.
