Jumping from PreCalc to MVC

This question does not pertain to me but I’m just curious about what you guys think about it as I’ve heard of people wanting to do this and was not really sure why they think it’s a good idea. Say, if I took Precalc honors as a junior and was doing meh compared to my peers (B to B+ range), and wanted to take MVC senior year (completely skip AP Calc AB/BC by self studying and getting a 5 on the exam), would this be a red flag to admissions or impressive? Do you think this sounds like someone with a poor math foundation who is too ambitious?

Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me. Math builds upon the previous course. There is a reason why schools have pre-reqs.

Sounds like a bad idea for a B student in math, and not all that worthwhile compared to just taking calculus as normal after precalculus.

Agree completely with @momofsenior1 - terrible idea.

I agree with the first three comments above.

Calculus depends a lot on precalculus, trigonometry, and algebra. Having a B in precalculus make me nervous about taking calculus AB as a senior. I would recommend that someone with a B in precalculus study math over the summer before taking calculus AB. Jumping ahead to multivariate calculus is a recipe for disaster.

It would seem entirely possible for a student who tried to do this to end up with a C or even an F in multivariate calculus.

“Do you think this sounds like someone with a poor math foundation who is too ambitious?”

Exactly right.

This might be beating a dead horse, but:

Don’t do it.

Ditto. These are courses you’ll need to make sense of MVC. Please don’t set yourself up for failure.

I would be surprised if any high school would even allow that. And rather than look impressive, I think it would hurt your chances of admission. Not only will such student not have the proper foundation in math, but character-wise it shows impatience and impulsiveness.

If you’re doing “meh” in PreCalc, what makes you think the above is reasonable?
