RHSstudent- do you go to ridgeland high school in Ridgeland, Mississippi?

English 35
Science 35
Reading 34
Math 33
Composite 34

hmm....no prep at all for this (first time taking the ACT) and took it after being at a party the night before til 1ish
kinda went into it without any expectations....prob why i did better than the ACT because I wasnt stressing myself out so much

jai--

a pilot?????? wow!!! will you write an essay about that to cap it off? you should.

what an outstanding EC/achievement!

that will definitely get you noticed.

Nice job!!!!! Along with a 29 ACT. If you have a good gpa and get great recs (ask to make sure they'e going to be great! and make sure to give them an overview of what you've done with your high school years),

which top 20 interests you? go to their website and see if they list some achievements from the 2009 class. Google past classes to see what they like/consider interesting.

good luck

"^ No way. You scored a 34 on reading and thought it was impossible? "

Yeah dude, I thought reading was impossible. That first passage about the woman threw me off pretty badly. Hell, I got a 630 on my CR PSAT so I wasn't confident either.

Hey... I will have my glider pilot license in August and my Single-Engined Pilot license in December ( since I need to be 17 to get my powered pilot license even though i'm ready to take it.. doh! )

With regards to the recs, I didnt give them an overview of what I've done in the past years :( :(. I'm on summer break now so can't meet them personally and give them a heads up.. Doh doh doh! I did tell my Math professor though about getting my pilots license but knowing him, he'll probably forget!

I was considering Upenn and Brown from the Ivy League. Searched
their websites but couldn't find any "listed achievements"...

Thanks much :)

I took the ACT for the first time ever as a sophomore in a rather unnurturing high school with very minimal preparation and i got a composite of 25. Not horrible.

English 28
Math 24
Reading 25
Science 22

I'm not expecting to get into Carleton or Beloit with those scores so I will study hard this following school year and take again next June. I'm gonna shoot for a 30 or higher. Good job to all of you that got high 30s...or are at least pretending to have those scores. :)

some theories I think are overly analyzed and flat out stupid.. IMO this is one of them. there is no point for choosing people to read your essay if they only gotta check how long you wrote to give out a score, especially when people's handwriting have different sizes.
[/quote]
It's not about how much the person wrote letter for letter (at least I don't think so). It's about one thing: details. The more and faster someone can write, the more details they can fit into their essay: examples, specifics, or just endless rambling.

The point behind the "theory" is that the ACT essay graders care about these details far over and above anything else. 'Anything else' happens to include spelling, grammar, word choice, sentence variation, essay structure, essay style, and form.

The result being that a given person could score perfect A+'s on essays in school in all of those categories above, but still come away with a whomping F- given by the graders on the ACT essay, because they were either:
A) Slow writers, and/or
B) Too concentrated on the above characteristics of the essay to come up with enough extra details to fill more than 1-2 pages.

Upenn or Brown are beyond the top 20--as in you have about a 10% chance no matter what.
Top 20 ranges from UChicago to Rice to Johns Hopkins to Northwestern to Vandy--usually about a 30% chance to be admitted. That's where you should have a reasonable shot and get a great education unless you must have Ivy.
In which case, roll the dice.
I know of one person who got a 36 and was waitlisted at Yale and ultimately admitted. Parents renegged on the promise to fund college at that time so person didn't attend and went to state u.

I see..

Well the colleges I was considering are:

Brown
Upenn
Tufts
Northeastern
BU
Penn State

Out of those, I think Tufts seems like a Top 20 candidate..

What are good ACT scores for those schools?

Average ACT scores according to PR are:

Boston University - 28
Carngie Melon - 30
Northeastern University - 26
Brown University - 29
Penn State - 25
Tufts University - 29
University of Pennsylvania - 30- 34 ( According to UPENN website )

hey, for some reason they released my scores today, even though when I had called last week, they said the new ones won't be up until Tuesday...w/e
so yeah...
32 overall
English- 32
Math- 32
Reading- 35
Science- 30
:/ I thought I did better in english and science, but did better than i thought in math...

What the *! I got a 9/12 on my essay and both of hte other times I've taken it, i've gotten a 12/12. This *es me off so much. Jeez. PLus it drags my english score down from a 35 to a 32. kDJlkdsfjdsfkjsf WHAT

English - 35 w/o, 32 w/ writing (i have never scored this badly on an English section)
Reading - 36
Math - 29
Science - 29

32 composite. IS THAT GOOD ENOUGH FOR IVIES? I DON'T THINK SO

writing scores are out?

yup......how do they do the writing/english combined
i got 35 english and a 12 essay but still only had a 35 combined

Has anyone else STILL not gotten their scores?

English-32
Mathematics-35
Reading-36
Science-35
Composite-35

Wow, just wow!!!! I'm in shock!!!!!!!!!:):):):)

Good luck to all of you who still don't know your scores and I hope you're all enjoying your summer.

lol i just found out the exact same thing happened to me: 35 on english, 9 essay and 32 combined english/writing. this annoys me. i dont get its importance/why they would do that.
