Writing-10

My goal is at least a 30 composite.

I took it in April, and got the following:

Composite: 35
Math: 36
Science: 36
English: 35
Reading: 32
Essay: 8
Combined English/Writing: 31

This is equivalent to 1560/2250 on the SAT.

The way ACT’s do the essay curve is really annoying. If you get a 35 on english, they expect you to write a perfect essay, so anything less than a 12 will result in your combined english/writing score to be lower than your english score.

I’m considering retaking it, to get a 10 on the essay, and possible raise english or writing one point. I’m not trying to get a 36, mainly trying to get my combined english/writing score up to 33, so that it’s equivalent to 2300 on the SAT.

I’m planning on applying to NYU, Northwestern, and Boston University (as a safety, I guess). All of them for a music program, but I want to maximize my chances of getting in, as my GPA is only around 91-92 for this year (unweighted).

Should I retake?

Also, I had already taken the SAT’s twice, and didn’t do anywhere near as well as my ACT’s. However, NYU requires all scores, and if I want to send subject tests I’m required to send the reasoning tests as well. I called them up and they assured me that they only use the highest score. But will a low SAT score, even though I have a great ACT score, lower my admission chances?

anonymous guy, i can’t attest much to the NYU admissions process, but i can tell you that you really should not retake the ACT. their essay scores are so irrelevant and unproven; you can show that you are a good writer through your application essays. and the combined eng/writing score is equally unimportant: my eng score went from 35 to 32 (9 essay) and i really just dont care haha. im also considering applying to northwestern next year.

annon - Check out the colleges’ websites as well as their pages on collegeboard.com. Most of the time it’ll say on either site which tests/scores they actually use for placement. However if I were you, I’d stick with the 35.

I’m going to go for 34+ from 31 in February with limited studying (due to ap’s, finals, and more subject tests in june).
Math 36(36) <- Hoping I get lucky again
Reading 33(31) <- Will refine my speed reading
English 32(28) <- My SAT writing shot up 130 pts with a better raw score and better essay in a span of 5 months w/o studying
Science 33(27) <- Was totally unprepared last time and guessed last 10. Should be better next time with time management skills.
Essay 11(6) <- I did not know this was supposed to be written differently than the SAT essay…and I lost motivation after guessing 10 on sci and ~8 on reading.

Well I’ve never taken it before, but my goal is for a 32 composite. I think I need to study…

annonymousguy-your crazed! don’t retake it! :o

i took it in february without studying at all and got
comp: 31 math: 28 science: 34 english:31 reading:29
this time i’m shooting for comp: 33 or 34, math: 32, science: 35, english: 34, reading: 33.
maybe if i actually study. :)

how do I get my reading up from a 28???

My goal is a 28, got a 27 from April

Hoping to go from my 29 that I got in April to at least a 30/31 in June.

I got a 26 in Oct…I got a 24 in April…I am studying hard, I really want a 30-32 in June, I think I can do it

First time taking it, but I’m hoping for at least a 30. Cal Poly here I come :)

I got a 31 in April. I finished the Real ACT Prep Guide so I got the Barron’s book which people on CC say is harder than the actual test. People say that it makes you feel like the test is a joke. I’m going for a 33+ in June.

Got a 31 in April… with a perfect essay score.

Hoping to get up to a 34… I had two 29’s in Reading and Science and that totally brought me down. No idea why Reading was so low, but I’m gonna ace it in June.

Unfortunately, I’ll have about 5 hours of sleep the night before and I’ll be packing for a trip to Alabama that same day. Stress…

took feb. test with no prep and got a 34…might retake to try for a 35…still undecided though

I haven’t yet taken the ACT, but I’ve been studying for it for about two months. I wish I’d started earlier!!! If my practice tests are at all accurate, I’ll ace the English and Reading sections, then flounder on Math. I’ve still got time to improve, though. Hoping for a 34 or 35 composite…!

This will be my first time taking the ACT test and I have no idea what score I’m expecting for myself. I am studying for the test though. I guess a score of 28 would be good.

32 is my current score. Looking for 33+ in June!

I got a 33 on my first test, and I’m sitting on it. However, I’m mentoring a friend who got a really low score on our test to take this June test, so I have to deal with it anyway! ^^ lol. At least I’m not doing it on test day.

Goal:
English:34
Math:32
Reading:31
Science:33
Writing:10

Composite:33

How hard is it going to be for me to raise my compositie from a 29 to a 33? Do you think its possible? Also, i want each subscore to go up 3 or 4 points.
