Also any tips to improve those sections
@Gyangdae just take as many practice tests as you possibly can. I’m also bad at reading and I tried this strategy one test (test was from Barron’s which I feel is harder than real ACT reading tests). Unlike the SAT where about 80% of reading Qs have line references, only about 50% on the ACT have references. So if you don’t read the passages, you’re gonna be scrambling around a lot looking for the pertinent information. I never finished on time (had about 4-7 unanswered Qs) when I went straight to Qs and did not read passage. On the Barron’s test (which has longer passages than real ACT book) it took me about 3 min to read each passage. I had plenty of time to go back to the Qs after and answer them with confidence. Also start with the passage that you like the most; this actually works and will increase your score. Using this method, I improved my score to a 31 on reading (remember Barron’s is harder than real ACT reading) and I finished with 2 min left. That’s just my opinion. Give it a try on a practice test or two and if it doesn’t work, at least you tried.
So I’m taking the ACT in June as well and and the last time I took it I scored a 27 without studying at all, my goal is to get a 34, my dream college is Rice, so does anyone have any tips? What books to buy, how to study, etc. Thanks!
Today was my last day of school. Que the intense ACT prep sessions.
Same here letmeseetheworld! I am starting tomorrow!
I did a practice English test. My scored improved significantly but I finished with 15 min to spare. :-S None of the ones I got wrong were from bad timing. I have a problem with this too because I usually second guess myself when I check over answers.
@BayleeRay I’d get the red book with 5 official tests and maybe Barron’s 36 for when you’re 33/34 and want some strategies to boost your score. There is a free copy of Barron’s 36 online if you can find it. Good luck!
Kaplan 2015 is a phenomenal book and I’m surprised no one has mentioned it. It’s a huge book yet reasonably priced, and 60% of it is content description/instruction. If you have problems with not knowing the content on English/Math, especially the math, Kaplan is your book. It explains the Math so well and so in depth and it helped raise my English score from a 23 to a 32. Yes, miracles are possible. It gives amazing and helpful strategies for Reading and Science as well. It includes 3 full-length practice tests in the book as well as a CD that includes 5 more online. And plus, a new one comes out every year so you always know it’s up to date.
If anyone has the red book can you please explain to me why for test #3 math the answer for question 53 is B? I mean if the interval is pi then why wouldn’t pi be the period? 8-|
Does anyone know some last minute prepping strategies for the last 2 weeks before the ACT?
@Gyangdae just go hard and continue taking as many tests as you can for this 1 week and then take the last week off so your mind can relax for the hard Saturday.
@outlooker
Could I have those practice tests you were talking about?
Yet again, all my stupid school work is getting in the way of ACT prep. I’m probably going to have to take this stupid exam in september again… Does anybody if anything major will be changing for the ACT exams next school year?
@blargenshmargen Essay is changing, more complex, imo.
I’m taking ACT for the first time in June. I average 30 on ACT’s in the Red book. I want at least a 31. Can people who have already taken it tell me if it is possible to get a 31? Is the Red book harder/easier than the test?
Lol this is just hilarious. Literally my mom walked in right after I posted the above comment with the april test information release that we ordered 3 weeks ago, and I’m just so pissed off at myself. The 6 that I got wrong in english (I got a 32) were literally all stupid mistakes from rushing. Even worse were the 4 wrong from math (33), in which I managed to get question 3 wrong because I did the first 10 math questions in 2 minutes. I’m such an idiot for rushing…
I have taken the ACT four times, and my high scores are always the English and Math, as I struggle with the Reading and Science. This June, I hope to get a 32 on the test. I can usually score between a 32-36 on the English and Math portions, (kind of a large gap) around a 30 on the Reading, and sadly, about a 26 on the Science. I have read numerous threads that say to study for large amounts of time to improve on the Reading and Science portions, but I have taken and already seen all of the available previous ACT tests and red book exams. So, what do I study now? I also have the Princeton Review: 1296 book and Barron’s ACT 36 book, but I do not believe that studying in these books will be as beneficial as studying legitimate, past ACT exams. Advice?
@letmeseetheworld what do youre intense sessions consist of
Without speaking to specific passages or questions, can you explain more about what you mean about the ACT Science being presented differently? Thank you.
Got a 29 for English and a 30 for science in April and I don’t know how to improve anymore… suggestions?
@mithuun15 I basically just do a lot of practice and review the ones I got wrong or topics I need to brush up on. Especially for math. I like to go to B&N to study since they have a lot of resources. It also helps me stay focused. Like today I was there from 12-5. I don’t do anything special just mainly practice and review. Hopefully this will pay off in about two weeks.
