June Orientation

For those planning on attending, the dates have been announced http://tulane.edu/studentaffairs/orientation/summer/dates.cfm

and you can now register http://tulane.edu/studentaffairs/orientation/summer/make-reservation.cfm

To anticipate an oft-asked question, if you attend Top Scholars Weekend (TSW) and get your course registration done, there is less of a need to attend June Orientation (JO) for sure. There are advantages (besides just another chance to be on campus and see New Orleans!), such as potentially meeting a roommate. At TSW not all attendees have decided for sure on Tulane, while obviously at JO everyone has committed. But there are other ways of finding a roommate. It is really just a matter of your personal situation (do you have a summer job? Is the cost an issue?) and preference. Most topics covered for parents are available online after JO, and some are repeated at August move-in.

Do kids and parents attend June orientation, or do kids attend alone?

Either way, it varies. I have seen/heard about sessions where it is half and half, others where at least one parent is there for almost all the attendees. I wouldn’t be surprised if sometimes there were a majority of kids there alone. Once there, they have sessions for parents only, naturally ones for just the kids, and some that are for both. Since the kids stay in the dorm, if they do attend alone it is not like they have to fend for themselves other than getting from/to the airport. And even for that, they can usually find another student arriving about the same time they are, either through here or on the Facebook site for Tulane Accepted Students. Often they will find someone on the same flight, especially if they are from an area where Tulane draws well.

My son registered for JO as soon as it opened! I’m going with him but plan on spending my 4 days in NOLA poolside with a few good books!

I didn’t register for the parent sessions but I might try to make an appointment with the financial aid office after everything settles on that front.

Thanks for the info!

Thanks for the info and link…any experience with how fast these dates fill up? Everything is so up in the air here Im afraid commit to a date.

Hmmm, I am not so sure about that. I only know that in the past some dates have been closed out and people had to pick another date, but it seems fairly rare. At least I haven’t heard a lot of complaining about it in the past. Maybe it would be better if you chose the most likely one and went ahead and reserved it, then changed if you had to. I haven’t read up on Tulane’s policy for cancellation/change, so you would want to do that first.

My DD booked the first one on May 29 yesterday and it said there were 95 more slots available. She said when you log on it shows how many are available for each date.

Excellent! Great info. Thanks DebMom.

Thanks
