June SAT Chemistry Review Thread

We have 2 weeks and 1 weekend left to prepare so I figured this would help review and get those concepts down.

My question: what's an appropriate adjustment for the practice tests made by various companies to get an accurate score? For example, a 700 on Sparknotes would translate to what on the real test?

Barrons
Kaplan
Sparknotes
PR

I don’t know if this is what you’re asking, but from my experience I got 100 pts higher on my actual test than sparknotes (though my practice scores and actual were lower than yours!). For PR, I think they have the most accurate practice tests, I got within 20 pts of my actual score. I’m not sure how they define the curve, but the curve isn’t set in stone on any test!

i did the kaplan, barrons and pr rushing through them and checking the answers before the hour was up
i scored lower than my actual and even excluding the stupid mistakes that i made that i would have caught if i went back to check my answers, the practice test scores, except one on the pr, didnt reach the score i got in may
they were all 700-770 ish. i scored an 800
but still. work through alllll of them. kill yourself almost. the practice helps a lot and don’t automatically think that the range is lower than the one you should expect when you actually take it.
fretting over being close to an 800 will push you to study every detail almost and actually get you that 800. at least thats what happened with me

I don’t know from experience, but I have heard that sparknotes is slightly more difficult than the actual test so a 700 –> 720 - 740

The others I believe are easier so 700 –> 650 - 680

i’ve recently gone through the barrons book for chem and studies everything except for redox? should i crash course it or is it not necessary?

i got really low on my practice tests. I took barron’s, PR, and the official guide for subject tests as practice tests. I scored around mid 600s, high 600s on all of them.
I got a 790 on the real thing. so yeah, its a crap shoot.

^ That’s really bizarre.

Barron’s scale is messed up. First they only give you a range (which is OK, since it’s not a released test) but the range is completely off. They say a 75/85 is 800, which is not correct. W/e, Barron’s tests are harder and they expect you to do some ridiculous calculations by hand.

Wouldn’t the “Official Study Guide for all SAT Subject Tests” be the most accurate source for scores?

It’s the most accurate test, but there’s only 1 and the grading scale only applies for that particular administration.

You can also use the “10 Real SAT’s”

Question: Are you given a periodic chart for the test? and no calculators either right?

Yes periodic table, no calculator. It’s okay though, because most calculations work out nicely (e.g. masses of compounds will be a multiple of the molar mass).

How’s everyone doing on studying? I’m planning on finishing Barrons by the weekend and then taking a practice test each day next week leading up to the test.

same plan here

I"m kinda nervous about the no calculator policy. THat really slowed me down on the AP exam. I hope I have time to finish!

In general, do scales vary much from the ones in the official guide?

You have epic time management skills. I plan to start as soon as I finish studying Math2c, which I’m starting today. I started a while back but stopped because of school for a few… weeks?

It should be only refresher after taking an AP Chemistry test, right?

^I hope so! haha I’ve sat through a whole year of AP Chem and did some prep for the AP exam so I’m hoping that even though I slacked off a bit this past week, I can still do decently if I review everything this weekend and a little next week.

Well I’m done with most of my classes’ finals (APs + classes w/ seniors) so I’ve had very little homework the past week or so.

I’m finishing up Barrons this weekend, will be reading through Princeton. I plan on doing all the practice tests by monday and then the two released ones by thursday.

There’s only one released test.
