Junior Answering Questions!

Oh and I got 5’s on AP bio and AP Calc AB last year…and I’m taking 3 APs this year

Are the stereotypes true about NYU, that a good percentage of the male population is gay? How does the school view them?

@Kingshrey13: From what you’ve told me, you seem like a solid candidate for any school at NYU. Stern might be a bit more competitive though. Also I don’t know your course load so that creates a bit of a grey area.

@TinnyT: I don’t really know the stereotypes so you’ll need to fill me in lol. But yes we do have a lot of “hipsters” and a strong gay population. I’ve heard that 66.7% of NYU students have dormed with a gay student. I’m not sure if this is true but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was. Also I feel like everyone views them as chill, generally liberally minded students apply to NYU and this creates a very liberal environment overall.

@Surish: My courseload for this year is AP Calc BC, AP Statistics, AP computer science, Honors Language, Electronics and Robotics, Business law, and Intro to law, and gym lol.
Las year it was AP Biology, AP Calc AB, Honors physics, Honors Language, Honors History, and gym. I also did Boys State (idk if you know what that is) and I was in an orchestra and in a band, I play percussion. Also, I had a question. How do middle class students at Stern usually manage debt?

What is liberal studies program really like? What are the students like? What are the professors like? Do you get a sense of differences in former LSP students as they integrate into CAS junior year?

Hey Surish! I’m currently a freshman at NYU. I’m in Stern and I plan to study abroad Sophomore fall. I was wondering if you or anyone you know (preferably someone else in Stern) has studied abroad in Prague before. I really want to know if the Stern classes in Prague are harder then those at NYU. I plan to take, Management and Organizations, Introduction to Marketing, and Organizational Communication and its Social Context while abroad. Is this a good idea? I want to enjoy being abroad, but I don’t want to fall behind in my requirements. Any piece of advise would be greatly appreciated! Thank-you!

@Kingshrey13: All of that looks good man, I think you have a solid shot. As for managing debt, I am not sure sadly. I’m sure many people take out loans. I’m sorry I could not be of much help. Honestly, if you know that you want to do (like I-banking) and have that go-getter attitude then Stern is going to provide a lot of amazing opportunities for you. However there is nothing wrong with sticking with a good state school.

@nyuorbust: A lot of my LSP friends at first hated being in LSP. They all felt like NYU did not really want them or that they were dumber. When I was a freshman, LSP was a program that you got deferred to if you were not accepted into your target college within NYU. Apparently that has changed and now LSP is a stand alone college, so I am not sure if that stigma has stuck around. Overall LSP has much smaller classes and the grading is a bit more relaxed. Honestly my friends enjoyed LSP after their freshman year but found it annoying how tight their class scheduling requirements were.

@Citybound11954: Yeah I have a bunch of friends who went to Prague and they absolutely loved it. From a personal standpoint, I would just take the bare minimum Stern classes required and really explore Prague/Europe. Send me a private message and I’ll tell you how to contact me/my friends who have visited Prague via FB!

Hey surish its me again. I got accepted into Stern ED I!!! Now my question to you is… how are the dorms for freshman? I hear mixed reviews from weinstein hayden founders and palladium.

My interests are aligned with:
Proximity to class
Size of room
Dining Hall
Bathrooms

Thanks in advance man.

@jumpin95: Congratz man, welcome to the club! And based purely on your interests, I would rank the halls in this order for you:

-Hayden
-Weinstein,
-Founders

(From your post, it seemed like these were the only dorms you were considering)

Palladium is not a freshman dorm, unless NYU is planning on changing that for next year. Also, I lived in Third North as a freshman and I had a good time. At first it may seem like a 10 minute walk to class is long but honestly it is not that bad. Try to get a dorm with a dining hall or a furnished dorm like Third North/U-Hall (both have dining halls btw).

Definitely stay in touch, and I’ll help you out during your first few weeks!

hey Surish will you please chance me? my situation is quite different if i may say.

I transferred in secondary school (9th grade) to another school in a different country (nigeria), I then took IGCSE (1A*, 3As, 4Bs and 1C), I just graduated at the age of 16 and currently in uni (started august 2012). i have a gpa: 3.21. I am to take macroeconomics next semester (applying to Stern). i am unable to take calculus, because I took MATH 1111 (college Algebra) and so to be able to take Calculus I in my current school I have to take either MATH 1112 0r 1113 to qualify. lastly I took Writing composition (A) in uni. does my IGCSE for economics cover the requirement (A). I want to know if my application is likely to be accepted as I know my situation is very different and being that I am citizen, but was born in Nigeria.
I played soccer for 2 years competed in Spain. I also did volunteer work (my essay is based on that), I was in the duke of edinburg (2years) i was in dance (2 years) won 1st place in competition. I am part of the african student association in my university as of now. I am going to join the marketing club this coming semester. can you please tell me what you think??

Hey so I just applied RD to CAS a few days ago, and I was wondering if you could chance me?

GPA: 3.38 (pretty low, but my high school has been ranked in the top 6 in the country the past few years, if that helps)

ACT: 31

APs: I have taken 10, spread out through 9-11th grade

ECs: Vice President of French Society, Volunteer at the Humane Society, volunteer at the hospital, drama, talent show host and president of the talent show committee

Also I’m a black female from Arizona. Thank you!!

@aawosanya: Honestly I am not sure of your chances. I have never had a friend in your situation. All I can say is do your best in all your classes, complete the Stern transfer requirements and just hope for the best!

@ariannalorren: I think you have a solid shot, assuming your GPA is unweighted. You seem to check out in all other aspects, so hopefully your essays were strong and I’m sure you’ll get in!

Hey surish! can you chance me as well?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/new-york-university/1440459-chance-me-rd-17-a.html

Hi everyone

I just want to know when is NYU ABUDHABI’s last examination deadline. Is January the last testing session or is it December? Besides, if I sent my IB scores right now, do you think they will accept it? Another question is that is a 40 point in IB diploma (7 in Math, Phy, Chem Hl, and Spanish B Sl. 6 in History Sl and a very bad 4 in English A1) going to help my chance or decrease it?

It is very urgent. Please help

@Surish

First of all, thank you so much for your (first) reply–it was super helpful and encouraging/motivating! Unfortunately, my school does not release rankings to the students (I’m not about colleges). My graduating class will probably have around 45 students, though.

I’m probably getting ahead of myself, but what do you think of the NYU dorms (for freshmen, I guess)? How are they in terms of cleanliness and social life (and similar aspects)? Sorry to sound so picky–I’ve never really been away from home before…

Thank you!

PS- Please forgive me if I’m being asking a question that has already been answered…no need to answer it again…I can just looking at posts that were made earlier.

@cneogy: I think you have a solid shot. At this point, you just need to apply and see what happens!

@linting2012: Sorry, I cannot really help you here.

@kluxshana: I’m glad to hear that and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you! In general, NYU pays a lot of attention to freshman dorms because they know how important your freshman year is going to be. The dorms are extremely clean and NYU puts a lot of work into creating a sense of community. In general, the trade off between NYU dorms is Proximity v. Renovation. The closer the dorm is to campus, the less likely it is to have been renovated recently.

I was admitted to LSP and am really excited about attending NYU soon! I just had a few questions on dorms.

What have you heard about Goddard? I’ve read online that that dorm is known for having the “weird” students. However, I heard it has a great location because it’s close to the campus.

What dorm(s) would you suggest for me? I’m not into the huge partying scene, want a dorm that’s not TOO far away, preferably with a dining hall, and a room that is somewhat decent.

Thank-you! :)

@HelloParis: I’ve heard that Goddard is a special housing assignment where you also need to partake is community service activities. This will lead to a much tighter housing community and I do not understand where the “weird” part is from. I think NYU is full of “weird” people that enjoy following their passions, which makes them unique.

Based on your preferences, I highly suggest Third North or University Hall. Both were recently renovated and feel very new while having solid dining halls. As I’ve mentioned earlier, the general trade of with Freshman dorms is proximity to campus vs. recently renovated. (Also I lived in Third North my freshman year and absolutely loved it, so I might be a bit biased.)

Also as for the partying scene, typically one random freshman dorm becomes the party dorm for the year. This year, I believe it is Hayden and last year, it was Founders. I can only suggest crossing your fingers and hope your hall doesn’t end up becoming the party dorm lol.
