Junior Business Transfer (nyu, nova, penn, gtown, lehigh, bc)

Hi I was wondering if anyone could chance me and give me some advice-

I initially applied to college as a pre-med/neuroscience major and then switched to business after I enrolled at the University of Miami (not a great business school). I got a substantial academic scholarship and am in the general honor's program. I absolutely hate it here and am not challenged whatsoever. Based on the last two semesters alone I would have been able to transfer to almost any b-school however, I had an awful first semester: 1 D, 1 C a B+ and a B (2.4 GPA). Long story short- I became extremely depressed after some personal family stuff, stopped showing up to classes, didn't take one of my finals and failed to hand several assignments in. Came back second semester with a vengeance, got my life back together and got a 3.85. Last semester took 18 credits and got a 4.0 (5 A+'s, 1 A). I'm also taking 19 credits this semester and should expect a similar 4.0 GPA. This should boost me to nearly a 3.7 but currently my GPA is only a mere 3.5 .

I'm applying to some of the top business programs in the northeast (Penn, Georgetown, Nova, BC, Lehigh, NYU) but fear it is just too little too late.

Can anyone give me some insight regarding my chances? Any advice or safe school suggestion? I need to get out of this place!

Here are my stats:

HS GPA: 3.99 Weighted, 3.6 Unweighted
13 IB/AP Classes at one of the top public HS's in MN
Soccer, Dance Team, Math Tutor, many other extra curriculars

UMiami Honor's Program- School of Business Administration
Major: Marketing and Finance, Minor: Psychology
Sem 1 GPA: 2.5 (screwed up big time)
Sem 2 GPA: 3.85
Sem 3 GPA: 4.0
Enrolled in 19 credits this upcoming semester, should get a 4.0

Had a high paying data analysis internship last summer with a major healthcare company (J&J)

Work part time as a tutor

Several business related extra-curricular activities in college, work part time as a waitress, expect to get another internship this summer, ALOT of work experience

Recommendation should be pretty great

**Does it make any difference if the 2 classes which I did so poorly in are courses that will not transfer? (One is a Business Calc class which will not transfer as well as a freshman orientation course). My GPA will go up SIGNIFICANTLY after I transfer without these two courses- will admissions committees consider this?

Thanks guys! I'm super nervous.

Oh- and my ACT: 31 (36 Math, 28 Science, 30 Reading and Writing)
SAT: 2070 (R: 700, WR: 700, Math: 670)
-Retaking SAT next weekend with the hope of a higher math score (idk why it was so low considering math is my strong suit)

also I graduated Magna Cum Laude from my HS (guessing top 10%)

anyone???

I take it you’re a junior transfer? Well with a 3.5 GPA your chances at Wharton and Gtown are very slim. Even with a 3.7 your chances would still be slim. I would say Stern would also be a high reach, but if you’re applying to CAS as an economics major it would be a high match. I think you have a good shot at Villanova and Lehigh though!

Because of your college GPA (regardless of circumstances) being relatively low in the applicant pool of top schools, you really need to reassess where you honestly can be admitted.

You don’t think colleges will take a holistic look at my application and consider my drastic improvement last 2 semesters rather than just looking at my cumulative gpa? I really don’t know how they treat cases like mine. I really screwed up and completely lost it first semester freshman year. But it was very out of character I’m usually a straight A student. My next two semester prove that

You’re probably in at NYU, BC, and Lehigh. As for the others…yeah, don’t expect too much. “Holistic evaluation” is more or less a lie, really. If you’re a junior transfer, they’ll look at your college stuff more. As for your high school grades, they’ll matter much less, since you’ve had two years to prove your worth.

Side note: be sure you can actually pay for some of these colleges, as transfer FA is pretty scanty, from what I hear.

My slip up was in college (freshman yr). I’ve gotten straight a’s and a+'s for a year now

so they won’t care that there was a death in the family and I completely gave up on school first semester? they will only care about my cumulative gpa?

Well, do keep in mind that what you write in your personal statement is pretty important, so they’ll be looking at that. I mean, there are probably going to be a few thousand applicants to the larger schools that you’re applying for. Of course, first and foremost, your GPA is a huge factor.

I should just give up shouldnt I

stop being so dam pessimistic. You posted this topic, people are telling you what they think.

Yeah, a lot of those schools will be very difficult for you to get into. But don’t be so pessimistic, as the above poster said.

Keep in mind, even if you did get into, say NYU, it’s a VERY expensive school with horrible FA. I’m a Sophomore currently and am currently applying to schools as a Junior transfer. I’ve had to do a lot of digging to find schools that offer good financial aid for transfers (and OOS ones at that, since I live in California). If I were you, I would look closely at Cornell (accepts a lot of transfers), USC, Carnegie Melon, UNC-CH, just to name a few.

“I got a substantial academic scholarship…”

Do you need that kind of scholarship in order to be able to attend the schools on your list? If so, then you need to identify safeties that are affordable - which could include staying where you are.

“I absolutely hate it here…”

If you don’t get into any of the places on your list, will you stay at U of Miami or will you take a leave of absence, re-consider your list, and re-apply next year? Can you figure out a way to not hate this university? If not, you need a solid Plan B.

"… and am not challenged whatsoever."

Why aren’t you challenged? Are there no higher-level courses for you to talk your way into? What about a research project or internship with one of the faculty members in your department? Don’t expect your classes to do all of the “challenging”. Figure out how to challenge yourself.

I’m not transferring just because I don’t like the school. There are other factors- I need to be in the northeast to be near my family and my fiancee. Money is not an issue. I will add some safer schools to the list but I will not be coming back to school in Miami.

Try Michigan-AA great B-school but will be hard to transfer into… never know unless you try!

I’m only looking in the northeast ONLY. Nothing in the Midwest, west or south

Forget about NYU. I got rejected with pretty similar stats last year. I go to UMiami too.

BU, Northeastern, Fordham, Babson, George Washington… look at these.

I’m not worried about it. NYU Stern is just about my last choice I just feel like I have to put it on my list. My top school by far is Georgetown or Penn (which I have absolutely 0 chance of getting into) so basically just Georgetown. I just retook the SAT and feel very good about it- definitely at least a 1450-1500 now. My rec should be awesome, and I had a pretty good internship so I’m really riding on the hope that these admission guys disregard my first semester freshman GPA alltogether and consider that as soon as I transfer I’ll have about a 3.8
