I’m trying to either go to Cornell, William & Mary, Northwestern, or get into the Honors Program at Ohio State. I’m still debating on whether I am going to major in History or Architecture. I’m currently President of the Junior Class at my high school, Student Council, a member of Spanish club, National Honor Society (Which I’m currently trying to run for a leadership role as well), Key Club International, Debate Club, Marching Band, and Wind Ensemble. I played basketball for my high school during my Freshman year and Sophomore year. I also played gold my freshman year as well. I’m currently in 2 AP Classes and I plan on taking 2 more next year. I have a 3.7 gpa and a 30 on the ACT (which I’m in the process of raising up). What do I need to improve on and what are my current odds for these schools?
To get into the schools and programs you listed, everything. Your GPA and ACT are both very weak for the schools you’re aiming for. You’re about 50th percentile for OSU ACT score wise, but your GPA is still weak. The average UW GPA for OSU is a 3.7, so you’re going to need more than that for the honors program. W&M’s average ACT is a 31, so you’re below average. Your ECs have nothing to do with history or architecture. NHS and SC are both super generic if you are not the Secretary, VP or Pres. I would also take more APs. You’re competing with the top students in the nations for these schools, so to be honest, 4 APs total is not going to cut it. Hope this gives some insight.
Thanks. It actually provides a ton of insight and helps a ton. I feel like I am shooting too high and I tend to lack some realism. I did take part in Summer programs one concerning Diplomacy and I plan on attempting to make it into W&M’s summer program for early American history. I’m not sure how much value those have for colleges however. And I scored a 5 on my APUSH test if that means anything.
