do i have a chance at the top tier schools, and columbia in particular?

indian male
gpa: w 4.18/4.8 for first two years, dont know unweighted

as far as grades, i have gotten 2 b+'s as final grades, all the rest a's, and i am on track for all a's this year. one b+ was in bio frosh year, one was in computer programming frosh year also, and i have an upward grade trend

im taking the hardest courseload possible, ill have 6 or 7 AP's completed after senior year

PSAT: 2150, im hoping for 2250+ on SAT, taking march 12th.

EC's

I have other minor things, and im sure I am forgetting something, but those are the major ones

any opinions?

You have a chance. However, you should also apply to some strong non-ivy league schools. By the way, I like the SNL reference in your username.

anyone else?

You have a chance. But don't be shocked if you don't get in either.

hey, you taking the SAT same time as I am, have fun, :P

I'm taking the SAT then too. You have a good chance, strong EC's and GPA. You'll be a good candidate, just be sure to do well on the SAT. And even if you mess up you can take it again senior year since you're only a junior. I love your username by the way, big will ferrell fan...."my friends call me WHISKAS!" lol

Morecowbell, I wish you the best of luck in your college application process. Your GPA and rank are perfectly fine for Columbia. At top 6% in your class, you are doing just fine. My school, for instance, doesn't even rank.

Make sure that your SAT is around what you practiced (Your score in the 1600 scale would be about 1430). I scored a 1440, but did well on the SAT II's (make sure those are extremely high). The only issue I see standing in your way of an acceptance to Columbia is your EC's. Nothing on there is truly "unique", but I must say that the 4 years is extremely consistent and colleges love to see that.

If Columbia is your first choice come September/October, then apply ED. Make sure that your Long Essay and Why Columbia answers are unique, pertain to you individually and demonstrate that you have shown interest in the school besides "I want to go because it is in NYC."

Once again, best of luck in the college process and your username is superb.

-Jaug1
Columbia University-Columbia College Class of 2009

thanks for your advice jaug1. i thought my ec's were pretty solid because of 4 top positions including class president and yearbook editor in chief, but i guess compared to other applicants for the top schools they arent great. i am also running for state office in fbla and i am entering this essay contest for the ayn rand novel "the fountainhead", which i think i might be able to place in. would either of these bolster my resume much?

Absolutely. Your EC's are not bad, they just do not "stand out," per se. The fact that you have been extremely dedicated and taken on many leadership roles will help you out tremendously. If you can this summer, go to a summer program and show that you don't take time off during the summer. Try to show that you are always curious for new ideas and eager to learn.

I think you stand a very good chance at Columbia. Best of luck.

thanks, anyone else have an opinion? also, what are some good ideas for things to do over the summer. i dont want to spend a ridiculous amount of money either.

How much money can you spend? If you want, look into the Columbia Summer Program (I did it last year and had an absolute blast). As far as summer programs go, it isnt that expensive and its a great overall experience.
