Okay so I’m a junior in high school and I have finished my first quarter with pretty good grades and am almost done with quarter 2.
I’m really interested in Boston College, it’s my number 1 dream school, just so expensive. Im also looking at (all schools of nursing) UCONN, NYU, UDEL, Villanova, University of New Hampshire, Penn State, MCPHS. I have thought about University of Maryland though it’s a bit far from Connecticut. I was thinking about even applying to some reach schools like northeastern. I really need help on seeing the reality of my chances and suggestions are always needed please! Also if you know if schools I’m looking for usually give out financial aid and how much (I have two older brothers in college)
Here’s my resume so far-
Junior year first quarter GPA was a weighted 4.4 with 2 AP classes
2 years of soccer, (1 year JV Captain)
4 years of wrestling manager
4 years of lacrosse (3 varsity)
President of my schools SADD club
Secretary of Beast Club (anti-bullying)
ski Club
Yoga Club
Community Service hours but not near 200
Student Government
Elementary School tutor/teachers assistant
Member/Helper in Unified Sports
Umich has a great nursing school. In terms of activities, as long as you have some that you are really committed to, and are able to talk about the ones that you list on your application with substance, you are on the right track.
Colleges tend to be interested in your unweighted, not weighted GPA. That is because the unweighted GPA is less likely to vary from school to school, thus making it a more fair way to compare applicants by GPA.
The question I’m pretty sure most schools will ask in some form on your application is “why nursing”. It can’t just be “I watched Grey’s Anatomy and thought it was interesting”. You will want to have experiences such as shadowing a nurse to talk about. They will want to see that you know what you are getting yourself into.
My unweighted first quarter gpa was a 4.28
That cannot be true. An unweighted GPA does not exceed 4.0. An unweighted GPA does not take into account the rigor of your courses, and an A+ is no different than an A. This is the scale used for unweighted GPA:
A+=4.0
A=4.0
A-=3.7
B+=3.3
B=3.0
B-=2.7
C+=2.3
C=2.0
C-=1.7
D+=1.3
D=1.0
D-=0.7
E=0.0
My school is on a 5.0 scale.
Try recalculating it based on that scale and see what it comes to.
Or even better, calculate it as most schools will:
A and A- = 4.0
B+ B and B- = 3.0
C+ C and C- = 2.0
Ect.
That will allow people to better chance you.
St. Anselm in NH is a good one.
You should also look at costs, a lot of OOS public schools would cost $40k (Penn State) at least, is a nursing degree worth $160,000?
Start with your instate schools or private schools that give merit scholarships.
