Here's what I have so far: Classes:
Pretty much the best classes to offer .. lots of AP classes. I've gotten all A's 2 semesters (including this one .. ) and 1 B the other 3 semesters. My gpa is 4.5 or 3.9 unweighted. Class rank is not reported but roughly 9/845. Testing:
PSAT: 61/80/70 (211 ... it was 213 in IL last year so probably not enough ... )
SAT I: not taken yet, and probably won't .. if i should tho tell me
SAT II: Math IIC 800, Chemistry 790 (these are both science/math, if I took French, I would probably get like 650ish, would that round my app more or just look weak?)
ACT: So far I have these ..
June test (I was a Soph.) - 33/36/28/30 = 32 comp (no writing .. not even going to send this to colleges probably, it was just practice)
Oct test (Junior) - 35/36/30/30 = 33 comp (9 on writing = 32 E/W)
Dec test - waiting for results, hopefully a 34/35... Sports:
Cross Country (F/S freshman year, varsity all other yrs)
Swimming (jv junior year) E.C.s
-Habitat for Humanity - volunteer prjct. Fr/So. year
-I founded a club that tutors kids in science and is a non-profit charitable organization .. so all the $ we make ($30/1 hr session) goes to a charity. We've made about $16k, and i'm co-president.
-I lifeguard during the summer (Fr/So/Jr year). I rescued a 25 yr old handicapped man and that's what i'm thinking i might write my essay about.
-Math Team. Got 6th in state Soph. yr.
-I play trumpet
-French Honor Society
-National Honor Society
-French Club
-I'm a math tutor in a program offered by our school. Rougly 50hrs.

What would be my chances to go to a higher school like an ivy? Or is that too far out of my reach? My sister goes to one, would that help a lot?

edit: Extra Info: I visited Brown and really liked it. I'm also a white male. Other schools to match for me if possible would be MIT, Caltech, University of Illinois, Dartmouth, and Emory.

I'm not applying to HYP (or any of the like) but i do have fairly competitive stats (although not up to CC standards), and i think that a 650 in the french is admirable.

I dont agree with flippy about weak ECs,
-founding a company that raised 16k AND tutors kids. i think thats cool.
-6th in state math team. thats good too.

BUT, most of the schools you listed are very difficult to get into. Write really good essays (i think they matter a lot) and you may have a shot.

Thanks for the help both of you. Anyone else willing to help .. advice would be great. What would be schools that are a good match for me .. I know the ones I listed are very competitive .. so if there are others that sound about right please list them if possible! By the way, woohoo, you said essays can be really important. Do you think writing about rescuing a drowning handicapped man would be good? I think it was a learning experience for me because most people just assume the job is a blow off and learning rescuing techniques and paying attention paid off. Also, I think that could be an interesting essay for a dean of admissions to read. Thoughts?

i think that ANYTHING can be a good essay topic.
you're topic could lend itself very well to the question that asks "write about an experice in which you learned someting," BUT it could also lend itself to a very trite essay.

for example you say "I think it was a learning experience for me because most people just assume the job is a blow off and learning rescuing techniques and paying attention paid off."

obvioulsy, you weren't writing a college essay, but i think this is an example of what not to do. its great that you saved someone's life, but the way it was written here was boring.

be witty, and write well, but dont think that you have to have some life changing event to write a good college essay.

umm..... YOU BETTER take the SAT I or ur not getting into brown, caltech or any of those schools......... and take another subject test, Ivys like applicants to take at least 3 of them

^^^ Um, no. Brown specifically states that they will accept the ACT with writing in lieu of both the SAT and subject tests. I don't know about Dartmouth.

If I were you, and decided not to take the SAT, I would still send in those subject scores. I'm not sure what to tell you about French, but I know a lot of colleges will allow you to test out of basic language courses with a 650+ on the subject test.

thx mflevity. so today i got my act scores .. (35/36/30/34)=34 .. 11 on writing ... since I got a 211 on the PSAT I think it wouldn't be smart to take the SAT .. a rough conversion says that's like a 31. I do better on the ACT because I'm bad at reading and it doesn't count as much (it's 1/4, vs. 1/3 on CR .. because I'm bad at vocab, too).
I did hear them say they don't care if you supply ACT w/ writing or Sat .. either works. I will definitely send in my subject tests because they are my stronger scores. The only thing is when I went to collegeboard.com around 95% of kids send SAT's to ivy league schools, and only 15-20% submit the ACT (so some submit both). So is it just rare to send only the ACT, but they don't care?
anyone have match schools for me? I want to go to school in the northeast (Boston especially!! if you have any matches please help, btw i did not like BC) or California. I don't care if it's not an ivy league school, I just want a match school that will challenge me academically and has a good learning environment.

match me with these if possible:
Boston University
University of Illinois
University of Chicago
WashU
Syracuse
Cal-Berkeley

Keep in mind that a college essay can be about just about anything, and while you do have a good story, remember that colleges are interested in the person you are, not just the things you have done.

I think Chicago provides a lot of what you are looking for (learning environment, etc.) but check out the core curriculum and make sure it's right for you. You sound very math/science focused, and Chicago is an all-around school.

I think BU, U of I, and Syracuse would be more than happy to have you, and WashU, Chicago, and Berkeley are more reachy.
