My daughter is currently at Texas A&M majoring in mechanical engineering. At the end of next semester, she will have 68 cr hrs. Her GPA at TAMU is 3.26. She is looking to transfer for the Fall 2013 semester. What are her chances of transferring into Mechanical Engineering as a junior at FSU? Also, when do they notify transfer students of an admissions decision? We are moving to Florida in the middle of next year and she would like to be closer to home, so she would be considered out of state (at least for the first year)...

A 3.26 GPA falls below the lowest possible honor (3.3), so I’m afraid her chance far less that normal.

Mechanical engineering is a major that has many students enrolled, thus more competition. In the end, however, by junior year several of those students have left because they cannot succeed in this major. Students usually need the first few semesters to know what they are getting to. Without having started as a freshman to a major, this lack is dangerous because the major may end up being to hard to pursue.

Normally, students who transfer do not pursue engineering majors or other higher order ones because of the introductory courses.

All in all, your daughter’s chances are not the best, and it is pretty risky. Perhaps you should discuss with her about the certainty of this major.

I should also say this about enrollment on out of state:

Once admitted, your current status will be out of state unless you have already had someone who you legally depend on for the in state prices.

Once admitted, if you are out of state, it will remain this way regardless of having moved there. And you would have to explore another option: scholar programs.

I actually transferred to FSU back in 2010 as a Junior looking to finish my degree in Economics, before that I already received my A.A. The only thing I had to worry about was getting into the school first, where as my program isn’t limited access (because I am actually in process of going through readmission into the school to get a proper degree in Engineering), and I don’t think neither is the engineering program. My GPA at the time was a 3.25-3.27. So there is a definitely a great chance your daughter will get in, and I also read somewhere that FSU offers waivers for certain amounts for OOS students.

The only thing she has to worry about is completing the pre-req’s to declare her major in Mech Engineering as a FSU student, which are Calc 1&2&3, Chem 1, Physics 1&2, First Year Engineering Lab, and Engineering Math/Differential Equations.

She actually has completed all of the prereq’s for ME (Calc 1,2,3, Physics 1 &2, and Chem), and has already moved to the higher level of ME at Texas A&M. She will actually have completed 68 credit hours in her field by May 2013. So, she won’t be just starting out in Mechanical Engineering… She is just wanting to transfer to FSU to complete her degree. Also, from my reading on the FSU Admissions website, after we have lived in Florida for a year, she can fill out the Residency Reclassification form and the residency for tuition purposes can be changed.

I assume she also had finished the core competency classes too, such as english 1/2, foreign language, speech, and obviously math. I am not sure if humanities class will play a part in getting accepted, but from my stand point, she should have no problems getting in.
