Junior planning visit in March

Hey guys! I got the "ok" from my parents to start planning a visit to WUSTL this spring, but I have a couple questions:

How can I request an overnight visit? (Is it something I sign up for online, or something I must call in to request?)

Would it be frowned upon if I skip the interview this visit, and have an alumni interview near my home when I am a senior?

Thanks so much for all of your help!

Hello!

How can I request an overnight visit? (Is it something I sign up for online, or something I must call in to request?)
I think there is an online form. Email your visit coordinator.

Would it be frowned upon if I skip the interview this visit, and have an alumni interview near my home when I am a senior?
Since you’re there, why don’t you schedule an interview- should be convenient, right?

Best of luck in your high school endeavors and on applying to WashU. Let me know if you have any more questions via PM.

You can request an overnight visit by going on their website and clicking the schedule a visit link under the prospective freshman page.

As for the interview, I STRONGLY suggest that you go ahead and schedule an on-campus interview. It is a very, very good way to show interest in the school and WashU is all about showing interest. The on-campus interviews are very laid back. Most people simply “interview” with a current student but I was lucky enough (or unlucky depending on how you look at it) to interview with an admisions officer. Even interviewing with an admissions officer was not nerve-racking. We simply talked about my interests, what I wanted to study and then we just talked about the zoo that’s right across the street from the school.

Also, it is my personal thought that this on-campus interview is what got me an invitation to Discovery Weekend. While most others attending the Weekend interviewed with students, I interivewed with three admissions officers. Showing interest can definitely pay off later.

Thanks so much for your responses! This is my first time doing something like this, so it’s a bit overwhelming.

I cannot, for the life of me, find the place where you sign up for an overnight visit. Is it something I write in under “other activities” on this link: https://uavisitscheduler.wustl.edu/Default.aspx?

And you guys persuaded me… I’m doing the interview now. Thanks for the advice :)

As far as I know, the school does not offer overnight visits. The only things that the school offers for campus visits are admissions information sessions, campus tours and interviews.

You may be able to stay at a hotel that the school has called Knight Center so that you can stay on the actual campus for a night but you will not have the oppurtunity to stay with a student (as far as I know.) Even if this is not an option, you can still stay on campus and explore. They give you a card that lets you eat in one of the dining halls for lunch and you are free to go into buildings and visit classes if you wish.

…That must be why I haven’t been able to find any info about it! Thanks a bunch for clearing that up!

Knight Center looks like a nice option. Great advice!

No problem! Good luck with your interview and visit!

Wustl does offer overnight visits, but i believe that you might have to call in order to schedule one

The Knight Center is definitely nice, but I highly recommend to stay in a hotel nearby… otherwise you’re basically only going to see Wash U on your visit and nothing in or around St Louis. St Louis is a really fun city, especially the areas nearby campus.

Moonrise Hotel… 3min driving/10min walking from campus, it’s right on the Loop(!). it’s a super cool hotel, brand new - definitely check it out.

Chase Park Plaza, in the Central West End… less than 10 min from campus (pricy, but amazing hotel and an awesome area, plus its nearby the Metro which takes you right to campus)

Parkway Hotel… also in the Central West End, smack dab in the Medical School

Sheraton, downtown Clayton… less than 10 minutes from campus. I think this is pretty popular but in my opinion Clayton is pretty boring and only has super fancy restaurants. Downtown STL is much better.

If you want to stay downtown St Louis (about 15min from campus, on the Metro)

 • Renaissnace Hotel (parents stayed there for parents weekend and were impressed, good rates and right on Wash Ave downtown)
 • There are two Hilton’s downtown including one by the Cardinals stadium and the new sculpture garden, which could be good in the spring time if there’s game when you visit

Regarding interviews, definitely do one! you can always do an alumni one, but my on-campus one with a student was one of the main reasons I decided to go here because it was really informal and they were really honest and positive about their wash u experience.

Thanks for your suggestions, vbball! I was actually in St. Louis this past summer for a family reunion and loved it! I especially liked Fitz’s, The London Tea Room, and The Cupcakery! There’s no way I could go to St. Louis without exploring the city :)

The overnight hosting program here at WUSTL is called “OWL” (Overnight Welcome Leaders). The best way to schedule a visit is to call the admissions office; they will work out an itinerary with you, which can/should include an interview, and they can match you with an OWL at that point. I would avoid the weekend of March 20, as there will be an extra 150 or so visiting students for scholarship interviews, and hence you will be less likely to be matched with an OWL, since all scholarship interviewees stay with current students. Best of luck!

Check out the City Museum. Coolest place ever!!

Thanks for the help and suggestions, you guys!

I’m so excited!
