On my first SAT, during my Junior Year October, I got 2260 (800M, 670CR, 790W)
(Now, I'm a rising senior)
I think I'll get around 720 on CR if I retake it.
I'm sure I can get 800Math, but I'm not sure if my writing score will be maintained.

I think these are fine. You’re in the range you need to be. People don’t get accepted or rejected based on 50 points on their SAT scores. I’d spend my time doing something else.

and if you feel that you really can improve your score then retake, but try not to let your writing score or even math fall

agree that a 700+ on CR is a psychological hurdle, if nothing else. 700+ would also help with your safeties (which probably don’t use W) and/or for merit money. With superscoring, there is no reason not to retake. Even if your essay drops a point, your W score will still be strong if you increase CR since CR is part of the total W score.

Your composite score is fine and your M & W are stellar, but a 670 CR is on the low side for HYPS—in fact, that score would put you in the bottom quartile for CR at HYP and at the low end of the third quartile at S. At that level, I’d say you’d be a real longshot for admission at these schools, unless you have some major “hook.” Don’t worry about your W going down. All these schools will superscore. Just concentrate on getting your CR up because your M and W are already terrific.

And start thinking about matches and safeties.

I heard that since I took the SAT in Junior year AND in October,
the university will therefore expect my reading skills to have increased and hence the higher score on CR.

The people on the NOT-AGAIN side tell me that if my W drops a little and I have 710 for CR instead of 670, it doesn’t really make difference, although that makes 2300…

What do you think? Thanks for your opinions.

Retake it for HYPS. A 690 isn’t very impressive at HYPS. Don’t worry about your writing and math score going +/- 30 points. Just get your CR up to a 720+ if you can (preferably 750+). All the schools superscore so it won’t matter if you go down 30 or so points in math and writing. Even if you end up with a lower composite, but a 720+ CR, it will help you at HYPS.

The Not-Again side are just plain wrong. And, I would advise you to add in a Lit-Humanities subject test. HYP has a gazillion high math-science apps, but engineering offerings are not their forte – liberal arts IS. Demonstrate breadth across disciplines to increase your chances; otherwise, the CR score will really give them pause.

I’m in the same situation as you, but with cr and math scores switched. And yes, I’m retaking in October. You should as well, but only if you dedicate yourself to practice, practice, and more practice. Take multiple SAT cr sections and see how you do. Even if you’re still scoring in the 670 range come test time, well, you’ll already be registered so just go in and hope for the best.

Thanks bluebayou
That is actually true and I have been thinking about that since my sophomore year; however, since I am doing IB Diploma in which I only choose one Humanities subject (Economics for me), I didn’t have many options, (I took more science courses as well…)

so that problem is anyways too late to be solved, and I’ll hopefully show that I have invested in my time in my subjects in the best way that IB Diploma can offer…

By the way, Mathematics for Yale and Stanford… a somewhat trivial question for liberal arts schools, but with both schools having good programs, maybe Stanford has a little better one (but I want to go to Yale more), is it true that Math at Stanford is a little harder to get in because of more science-math applicants? Thanks

In all honesty, I really don’t feel like it’s necessary for you to retake it, but I know exactly how you feel. I got a 2170 (680M, 740CR, 750W) and I have no idea whether or not to retake, because of that one score below 700, akin to your 670 in CR.

If you are an unhooked applicant to HYPMS, a sub-700 CR score is generally not good.

A 670 is into/around the bottom 25% of these schools’ middle CR ranges - and undoubtedly those who have low CR scores (or standardized test scores in general) are recruited athletes/URMs/others whose standards for admission are different than those of unhooked applicants.

Definitely retake the SAT with that CR score… and to the poster above me, I wouldn’t hesitate in retaking the SAT either.
