Hi I'm a junior in high school searching for colleges to apply to. I visited William & Mary and I loved it. I like the size which is not too big but not too small. I like medium sized schools because you can sill see familiar faces around campus but still meet new people all the time. I also love the focus on undergraduates there and that is really important to me in a college. I want to be able to actually talk and get to know my professors. I also like the fact that there is opportunity to get involved with research there as an undergrad. I also like the quirkiness of the culture. So if any one has suggestions of schools like W&M, that would be nice. Here are some extra factors about me. I'm basically undecided about what I'm majoring in but I'm thinking about history, political science, international relations or maybe biology. I have no idea so I need a college that has a wide variety of majors but I guess I'd like colleges that are better at humanities than the sciences. Again, I like medium sized colleges and colleges that are in either urban or suburban areas. I'm not really a fan of rural areas. I also like schools with a lot of school spirit and that get excited about their school. I'd prefer schools on the east coast. I don't want a huge party school but I'd like the option to go to parties if I want to.
I have a 3.85 unweighted GPA. My SAT is 740 CR, 530 M and 560 W. I know that is really bad but I did not study at all and I am retaking it.I do IB diploma so I;m in the hardest course load possible. I am female, black and I live in VA. This is a basic list of activities that I do:
Marching Band. I was Music Librarian this year and probably Section Leader next year. I also got a varsity letter for this last year.
Lacrosse: I was JV captain last year and I'm on Varsity this year. :)
Book Club: VP this year and I'm President next year.
It's Academic: We don't really have captains for this but if we did I would be one next year.
Model Judiciary: I might be a captain next year but I have no idea.
National Honor Society
History Honor Society
Science Honor Society
Tri-M Honor Society
Next year I'm joining Spanish Honor Society
I'm also in Fellowship of Christian Athletes but I don't take this too seriously and i probably won't put it on my application next year.
Last summer I went to Governor's School for the Humanities.
I also won 1st place at Science Fair for my school and won Honorable Mention at Regionals. I guess that is it. So if anyone had suggestions for safetys, matches etc. I'd be really grateful! Thanks for reading my long post. :)

Georgetown, Tufts (maybe), Boston College, U of Rochester, Emory, U of Miami, Michigan

Just some suggestions

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ve been looking into Georgetown and U of Rochester but I hadn’t thought of the others already.

University of Chicago, University of Michigan, Tufts, Emory, Duke, Vanderbilt

How much can your family afford?

Holy Cross-very good academics, strong school spirit and only 1 hour from Boston. HC has Division 1 sports-member of Patriot League and plays most Ivies in the major sports. HC also has tremendous alumni network(helps for job placement). Might look at the Holy Cross website very informative plus the school meets 100% of demonstrated financial aid.

@Erin’s Dad. I think at the most out of pocket would be 10,000.
@par72 Thanks, I’ll look into Holy Cross.

UMich will make you full pay (>$50K/year) so forget that. I would also try the ACT to see if your scores are better there than with the SAT. If you’re not from NoVA you might consider UVA.

@Erin’s Dad: I am planning to take the ACT as well but I think that my SAT scores should go up if I retake it especially because I did not spend as much time studying as I should have. Unfortunately, I am from NOVA so I don’t know about UVA but my high school is one of the less competitive high schools in NOVA. I have considered UVA but if I got in, I would be comfortable with the size. It is a really good school though.

Look at LACs.
They’re generally good with financial aid…
And take the SAT 2s. Some of those top LACs take SAT 2s in place of SAT scores

You might find that some of the small town LACs are especially interested in minority applicants. Lehigh and Bucknell, for example, are a little bigger than the the LACs in Pennsylvania like Lafayette and Gettysburg and might be interesting. Emory is a good idea for a reach. U. Pitt for more of a match? Maybe you can stay overnight at a small town school to see how it feels. What about Davidson as a reach?
