I was considering attending the Junior Statesman program next summer. Has anyone else attended? If so, what sorts of grades and ECs did you have and did you think it was a good experience?

its good to be a member of the club. hehe. just show a strong interest politics, talk with your history and english teachers, and of course the club moderator. you don't have to be in government classes to attend-- i knew someone who has been going since their freshman year, and she's going to be a senior next year. it's also helpful if you're a JSA officer in your chapter.

Do you have to be part of a local chapter to attend their summer program?

I dont think so. I am going this summer. I was a member of the chapter at my school, until it got shut down (stupid teenagers), so I wasn't this year, and I still got in. So it doesn't look like its imperative. It probably is helpful though.

Plus, you might as well just join the local chapter. If you are seriously considering going to the summer program, then I think you would really like the local chapter. It can't do any harm. Its fun.

There isn't a local group in my area that i can find and there isn't much interest in one at my school but i still really wanted to go, so i was hoping you didn't have to be in one to go.

yeah i dont recall it asking if you are a member anywhere on the application. so i doubt it makes a difference because, well, how would they know? it does ask about debate experience, and JSA helps with that, but if you are in other similar political/debate oriented groups, dont stress.
