Junior Sternie answering questions

Are you interning somewhere and where do people your year usually intern?

Hey thanks for taking time to answer questions.

I am currently transferring to a 4 year university this fall from a community college, the only problem is I’m changing majors. The university is fine with it, but I still need to take some general level classes and it’ll be much cheaper to take them at the community college than at the university. So my question is this:

If I don’t enroll in any classes this semester will the four year university (cal state san marcos to be specific) withdraw my acceptance? It would just be awesome if I didn’t have to pay to go to a four year university to take classes I could just do at the community college. Thanks again man!

@magic123: I am currently interning at a French bank’s investment banking division in New York City. I lucked out with this internship as Investment Banking is highly sought out after (especially since I only just finished Sophmore year). Most Sternies intern at start-ups or fledgling hedge funds and some get lucky enough to land an internship at a Bulge Bracket firm.

@chickensalad7: Most universities let you defer enrollment for one year, you should probably look this up on Cal State’s website. In fact, I would suggest just contacting their academic advisors so you can get the answer straight from the horse’s mouth.

Still answering questions via this thread or private message.

Hello, I am still a high school rising-junior and I plan to apply EDI to Stern next year. I would really appreciate it if you could look at my stats.

I really hope to attend NYU Stern because it is my dream school. I feel that my EC’s are too broad and do not show my passion toward business, so I would really love it if you could give me more advice. Thanks in advance!

@emotionprelude: You’re projected scores would give you a solid chance of getting in. Just study hard and come back to this forum in a year when you have an actual SAT score and locked (or close to locked) gpa.

As for your ECs, they are a bit scattered. Some of them are solid, good but generic ECs that most top students will have like NHS president or varsity captain thar should stay. They are like the bread and butter ECs but you need other ECs that explain why you’d want to forgo a general liberal arts education and jump right into business. Thus you should also try to hone in on business related ECs or ECs that you feel passionate about that could be combined with busiess.

Some examples:

-DECA
-FBLA
-Combining your musical talent with business to create something you’d truly enjoy

Honestly, it’s all still nebulous. Just focus hard on your SATs/GPA (which is based on a rigorouse courseload)/SAT IIs and come back in a year. Try to squeeze in a business related EC here and there, but you’ll still have plenty of time to do that after your junior year.

Let me know if you have more questions.

Hello. I am a rising senior applying to Stern ED1, and I would also appreciate if you could evaluate my chances for both the BPE Program and Core Stern.

GPA: 90
Weighted: 3.83
SAT: 2050 (should bring this up)
Ethnicity/Gender: Asian Male

I have taken/taking all honors/AP my school has to offer besides Spanish and Biology.
AP Scores:
World History (5)
English: Language and Composition (4)

Extracurriculars:
President and Founder of Political and Economic Philosophy Club, part of National Honors Society, president of Stock Market Club, and part of 4 other smaller clubs including Forensics Team. (My school does not have FBLA)
Varsity Tennis Team, Captain for Spring '13
I play two musical instruments proficiently.
Over 1000 hours of volunteering
Worked over 200 hours at family-run business and 60 hours at a student-run business

Legacy at New York University (Parent)

As long as you show dedication, leadership, and success for something in your ECs, it really doesn’t make a huge deal whether or not it is “business-related.” I didn’t do anything related to business/finance/econ whatever in high school, instead, the bulk of my accomplishments were in music and math (I guess math counts as sort of business related?) but still got into Stern.

Thank you for your advice. I know it is too early to post my stats since my scores are not available yet. Still your advice will be a great help for me to plan my junior year schedule.

Indeed I have always felt that my ECs were too scattered. Unfortunately my school doesn’t have any club related to business. Somehow most clubs here are related to sports and arts. Whenever I tried to form a business club, my friends and other students weren’t even interested.

Thanks again, I will continue to look for business related ECs and will return to this thread after I have my real stats.

How often do spots in WTE open up?

@finance483: You’re looking solid, you’re strong ECs, courseload and legacy status should compensate enough for your relatively weak GPA/SAT (especially compared to all the other Asians that apply). It might be hard to really improve your GPA at this point but your SAT score is still open so really focus on that. With a 2200 or so score, your overall application should be strong enough for Stern. As for the BPE program, I’m doubtful of your chances. That program is reserved for the students with rich parents or those who have cured cancer (unbelievably amazing ECs and Stats). Don’t feel discouraged though, just apply to see what happens.

@bsumone93: Seldom because this is an prerequisite class for all NYU freshman. Try contacting a specific teacher to see if he will just take you in. However that is also unlikely because classes are limited to 15 or so kids (to keep things intimate).

Thank you! Just to make sure – if I put down the BPE program, do I also get considered for Stern Core? Thanks in advance

@finance483: I do not know, but I would assume so. You should double check with an admissions officer so that you can get the answer straight from the horse’s mouth.

@finance483 yes, you get considered for core program if you dont get into BPE.

Still answering questions.

This is my last bump until I let the thread die out. I’ll still be answering questions via this thread or private message. I’m glad I was able to help you all!

where would you go for ISP as a Junior?

What is the cheapest way to get Microsoft office on your mac? its so expensive! I was wondering if nyu offers student discounts or something?

@appletoapple: This year NYU is changing up one or two of the sites. It may just be a rumor but students think it is going to be Tokyo and I’d really love to go there. They have a great night life, it’s cheap as hell (relatively to the other options) and I’d really enjoy the tourist attractions there.

@alisha4NY: You have a couple of options. NYU’s computer store does have discount deals on Microsoft Office, but it won’t be anything ridiculous. If you are in Stern, you get access to Citrix, which is a program that grants you remote access to Microsoft Office among other programs. It would be like renting a ****ty lawnmower from your neighbour: It’s free, get the job done and anyone else would recognize it but it will never be good as a brand-spanking new lawnmower that you just purchased. Finally, you could just use Google’s programs that imitate Microsoft Office. This option is also free and will feel alot smoother to use, but you may run into trouble with professors who don’t understand these other programs.

Chances?

gpa 4.23 weighted (my weak point - maybe top 11 or 12%)
SAT I 2340 combined (800 cr 750 m 790 w)
ACT 34
SAT I US Hist 760 Bio 750 will take Math II

4 APs - 5’s - Macro, gov & eng lang 4 in Physics B - taking 5 senior year

Excellent extracurriculurs - state champion speech

Would I get in RD?

@amazon: Are you applying to Stern RD? If yes, you’d have a fair shot. Probably a bit above 50% but your class rank does hurt you a bit and your excellent extracurriculars are lacking.
