Junior Transfer student, housing questions!

I am considering transferring to U-Mass Amherst in the fall, in fact it is very likely that I will choose this school but I have a few questions about housing. Since I will be transferring in as a junior, how does the housing roommate selection work? I read on the U-Mass website that the new residential hall for transfers is McNamara which is a branch of Sylvan that is made especially for transfers to live in but upon further reading I have heard that this is a horrible place to live because it is so far away from all the other residencies among other things. Is this going to be my only choice of places to live? Where do most upperclassmen who aren't in frats or sororities live at this school? Does everyone have apartments by then or are there fun junior dorms still? This is probably my biggest concern about transferring because I feel like by junior year everyone has a set group of friends and they will all be living together in apartments and such. Upon transferring would I even be able to find someone who I liked that would want to room with me and how would I go about doing so? Basically I want to know, is there any other choice of residency for transfer juniors that isn't completely lame or isolated or am I gonna get stuck where they put me? It might help to add that I want to have a social life when I go here, I am a partier so I want to make friends. Hopefully someone can de-stress me on this subject!

I’m in the same exact situation as you. It makes me nevous a bit as well. Are you a girl or guy

Yeah that’s like the one thing I can’t stop thinking about. I’m a girl

I responded to your similar question in another thread. Personally I don’t love Sylvan; the room are quite small. Unless you are in Southwest, a lot of the dorms can feel far flung as it is something of a big sprawling campus. I might not want to live in Southwest as a junior, but maybe you would be fine with it.

At UMass there are lots of ways to make friends and be part of a community beyond housing. Be sure to explore those options as well.

Do any juniors still live in dorms at that point or is it just transfer juniors? Is it gonna be lame for me?

My son is a junior. He lives in an off-campus apartment. Many juniors seem to go off campus, but he has many friends that still live on campus, and they are widely spread across campus as well. Some live in the new honors housing, some are on the hill, and some in central area. Many also live in North Apartments. I don’t know if that is an option for you? It is much more expensive … but I’ve heard they are nice. Sylvan is known as being very isolated.

Im hoping to try and get into central or southwest…not sure how the lincoln or north apartments work but I wouldnt mind living there. but, i doubt id be able to

Are you a junior? Yeah I’ve heard Southwest is the place to be as far as the social aspect goes. An apartment would be ideal but I have no idea how I would even go about that cause it’s not like I know anyone there haha. I dunno I’m just hoping I don’t get shafted somewhere lame and I really hope I get a good roomate. On that note does anyone know how the roomate selection works for transfers?

I’m going to be a junior in the fall. I finished my application a couple weeks ago. Can’t wait to hear back! I’m pretty sure transfers have the same opportunity to fill out preference forms for living situations but I’m going to just wait until the time comes. The social scene is amazing no matter where you are I’ve heard. It shouldnt be to hard for us to meet people either Haley.

Hoping for the best

hi i know this thread is like over a year old but it came up in a google search and i was wondering if it worked out for you because I’m in a similar situation…
thank you!
