Junior Transfer With Only 1 Semester of Grades

Like the title says I’m a junior transfer (for fall 20) who only has grades for 1 semester of college. (2 after this current semester) Typically, junior transfers have 1.5 semesters of grades to report. So basically I’m technically a junior transfer but have the grade record of a sophomore.

I’m in this position because of a ton of AP’s and dual enrollment classes that have credit but no grades associated with them.

Will this hurt my chances?

For context, my SAT was solid but my HS GPA was below 3.0. The best thing going for me is that I have a pretty significant upward GPA trend that went from 2.7 to 4.0 from my senior year of HS to college. Also, I’m 2 years ahead of my peers. They’re seniors in HS right now while I’m a sophomore in college.

The schools I’m applying to or have already applied to are all between T20 and T60~

Thanks in advance

So to be sure I understand - you had a sub-3.0 high school GPA, have completed one semester of community college, and are applying to be a Junior at Top 60 US Universities?

Why are you “technically a junior transfer”?

I’m a Junior transfer because I’ll have 63 credits after this semester. I had 10 AP’s and a few dual enrollment classes that helped me get to 63. I called the Admissions offices at the schools I’m applying to about whether I should apply as a Junior or Sophmore and they all told me Junior. Also, I’m at a 4-year school, not a CC. I’m transferring because I want to attend a better school.

Your AP credits won’t count as credits on a transfer application. The schools you are applying to will look at your high school record and your one semester of college and evaluate you on that. After you are accepted, they will give you credit for your AP courses if that is what they do. Some schools give credits for AP, some don’t. Generally, the more selective the school, the less likely they are to give AP credit.

I think it’s going to be hard to transfer to a highly ranked school with a sub 3.0 high school GPA and one semester of college.

You still only have 1 semester of college grades. That will hurt your chances at some schools and likely knock you out of all the top ones on your list. Where did you apply?

Applied: UNC, U Minn.
Applying: UVA, Boston College, Boston U, Northeastern, Ohio State, TAMU, RPI, Villanova, UMass, Purdue (In-State), and IU (In-State)

Dual enrollment college courses taken while in high school should have a college record including grades with the associated college. You need to include all college courses and grades that you have completed in your transfer applications (even if the grades were passed / not-passed type of grades). How many / what dual enrollment college courses did you take while in high school, and what kind of grades did you earn in them?

AP credit will be considered by each transfer target by its own AP policies, not by the AP policies of your own college. I.e. the amount of AP credit your transfer target will say that you have may be different from the amount of AP credit your current college says that you have. Which AP scores did you earn?

Also, you may have less credit than you think if some of your current college courses cover the same material as your dual enrollment college courses or AP scores (e.g. if you take calculus 1 at two different colleges, you will only get credit once; if you take calculus 1 after AP calculus AB, you will only get credit once).

Junior transfers are typically expected to be ready to declare a major and have completed all frosh/soph course requirements for their major (if offered at their current college), as well as some general education courses specified by your transfer target. Have you done that?
