Junior Year Help!

I’ll be a junior next year and I have to admit I’ve been a little unfocused. I do great in school but I don’t have that burning passion for something yet.

I don’t volunteer frequently. I have maybe 25 hours and it’s not consistent. It’s not that I don’t like charity work, I love it! But I have a big family (I’m one of 5 kids) and, between car arrangements and babysitting, I don’t have time for it.

I want to do so much with my life and I just realized all my friends have been volunteering, going to leadership camps, winning competitions and I’ve done nothing in comparison!

I want to get into a school like Yale or possibly Stanford but I think I might be too late.

Right now I have a 4.0 unweighted gpa and a 4.56 weighted. I’m in honors/AP/IB track everything. By the end of high school I will have taken
6 science courses (3 years bio, 3 years chem, 1 year physics – junior year is a combined chem/bio class),
5 math (through calculus BC),
4 English, and
3 history (AP Euro, APUSH, AP Govt/Econ).

I’m a math/science person who also likes writing and learning about history and the world around us. Oh and I love to read. I’m so indecisive about everything. I desparately wish I could take more classes but my schedule won’t permit it nor do I really have the time.

I’ve been doing choir and track. I plan on continuing choir all 4 years, but I plan on getting a job next year so I won’t be able to do track anymore. But it’s not like I’m a star athlete or anything.

I belong to a service club for people in Ecuador, HOSA (future doctor club–I don’t want to be a doctor but I just find it interesting and the debates are fun), and I used to be a part of a club that eats lunch with the special Ed kids, but now they just sit and visit with me and my friends anyway so I don’t go to the actual club.

Whew. Lots of info. Sorry! The dilemma is that I know I’m not special. I’m not doing anything unique or recognizable. I’ve won no awards. Never even been to a competition besides track meets. I’m lost!

I want to start volunteering at the hospital because I get my drivers’ license soon, but it’s a year long waiting list. And I know being a hospital volunteer is not extraordinary, but I still want to do it. I want to join journalism but it conflicts with choir and my parents practically abhor my school magazine/newspaper. I really want to do mock trial but it’s extremely time consuming.

I’m taking my AP Euro exam in a month and my SAT Math II test in two months so I’m kind of freaking out. By the time high school is over I’m set to take 6 APs total (Euro, US, Govt, Calc AB, Calc BC, Physics) and 4 IBs (English, Biolgy, Chemistry, French). I’m not trying to appeal to colleges in this regard. I actually want to take those classes.

What I’m asking is…what does it take to get into those top colleges? Is it even worth it? AM I too late? How can I find something special about me that colleges will notice/appreciate and something I care about?

Thanks for any responses! And sorry for telling you way too much. You can probably tell I’m a girl…

Since you are interested in math and science, you should definitely look into math/science competitions such as the AMC 12, USA Physics Olympiad, etc. Since it also seems like you like history, I would definitely recommend you to try out the National History Bee and Bowl. I have been competing at these competitions every year, and I would have to say that it is a great way to show your passion for history/math/science in general. Study hard for the SAT and try to get a 2200+ in order to stay in a safe zone for being accepted to the top colleges. I would say that a 2300+ score looks better, but a 2200+ score should suffice. I am in the same situation as you (going to be a junior next year), so just work hard, take hard classes, and show a passion for something. You definitely have a good chance for any of the top colleges, don’t worry about it lol.

Have you taken the SAT yet? I know they are changing the PSAT for the first time this October, which sucks because study materials are limited. I have a feeling it might be harder to be a national merit for class of 2017 haha. The SAT is changing next March I think too. I think it’s going to start being out of 1600 again

No I haven’t taken the SAT yet
