Junior Year Schedule Issues

Hey guys,

Can you guys offer me some help for next year? (The ones with question marks are the ones I'm questioning.) Keep in mind that I'm more of a science-math person (dream job - most likely biomedical engineer) and that I am only taking ONE science course.

gym (required)
spanish III
science research
pre-calc A (highest math class)
? AP stat (to help with science research; I'm wondering if it is worth taking?)

? AP English: Language and Composition (I was planning on taking ap english: lit for senior year but my teacher told me language and comp. will be more helpful for me than lit if I'm not going to pursue an english-related occupation)

? Physics A (not required, but my dad wants me to take it asap. But, I could take in college.. right?)

? AP Chem (I want to be a Chem TA senior year, but there's no guarantee I will get it since only 4 are chosen out of tons of people. In order to be a chem TA, I have to take AP chem junior year. Also, I would have to drop orchestra senior year to be a Chem TA.)

? AP Bio (I probably want to pursue a career in medicine in the future. but - not sure if this is relevant- I got a 780 on my Bio SAT this year)

? Orchestra (If I take AP stat, I have to drop this class. Orchestra isn't a big deal to me, but if I don't take this, I can't go to All State or Area All State if I make it. I've never made it to even area all-state tho in my entire life... meaning i probably won't make it next year. also if I take AP chem and ap stat junior year and become a chem TA senior year, then I can never go to area all-state or all state for the rest of my life.. and I would like to go at least once to area all-state.)

AP US (I'm taking AP world now, and first quarter I got a B. Second quarter I think I have an A, like a 92/93. dunno if that matters).

basically, these are my issues:
AP chem vs AP bio vs Physics A
AP stat + AP chem junior year?
AP stat vs Orchestra (is it worth taking/dropping orchestra?)
AP English? APUSH?

Thanks! Sorry that this is really long...

It’s crazy how every school except mine offers all these APs to anyone other than seniors…

First of all, how many class periods do you have in a day?

I think you need to decide how important orchestra is to you, because it affects both your junior and senior class schedules. Personally, I think that you should stick with it, but its your decision. I would also take to a teacher about being chem TA and figure out if you want the commitment and how likely you are to be chosen.

So, I personally would have you take:
gym (required)
spanish III
science research
pre-calc A (highest math class)
AP chem (then you can either be a chem TA as a senior or take AP bio as a senior? You’ll have some flexibility.)
orchestra (or, if you really want to take stat, go for it, but I would wait till senior year and replace pre-calc with stat … you sound as if you’d miss orchestra :stuck_out_tongue: )
AP English
APUSH

Why do you feel the need to take AP stat if you’re already in pre-calc A? Is there something I’m missing? :)

It really depends on what is more important to you. AP stats is a very good class to take regardless of what you plan on majoring in college, so I think that should definitely be one to add to your schedule. (Which is a shame because I am currently in orchestra and LOVE it, and wouldn’t drop that class for anything in the world)

…Let me just say I hated APUSH, it was a PITA and I’m just not a history buff.

If you’re planning on going into medicine, AP bio and AP chem are a must (whatever year you decide to take them is up to you). AP Physics is a class I think you should take in high school just so you can experience it before you go to college.

If you have time for AP Literature, I think you should take it. You can self study for the AP Lang test because it is not difficult in all honesty and the AP Lit class will really help you analyze material more indepth, which is very useful in college (and just everyday life). But if you don’t time for it don’t sweat it - I just strongly recommend taking AP Stats, AP Chem, AP Bio, and AP Physics sometime during your high school career. Good luck!

Bookworm934: thanks for you advice! (: I have 8 class periods in a day. I want to take AP Stat to help with science research because apparently it helps a lot. Does pre-calc cover statistics? to be honest, I don’t know much about pre-calc… but I have to take it next year because it’s required.

thanks cyu2012! :)

Dont take AP Bio if you already took the SAT for it…
