I am currently a sophomore. Here are the classes I’ve taken and grades I received in the most recent semester
9-
- Honors 9 LA- A
- Honors U.S. History- A
- WG Honors Algebra 2- A
- Honors Biology- A
- Spanish 2- A
- Orchestra- A
- P.E. and Health- A
10-
- 10 Honors LA- B
- WG AP World History- A
- WG AP Physics 1- A
- Honors Chemistry- A
- WG AP Calculus AB- A (I tested out of precalc)
- Orchestra- A
- Principles of Biomedical Sciences- A
I want to go to medical school, so just know that is a focus. Here is what I’m thinking, but I’m afraid it will be too hard.
- WG AP English-Literature and Composition
- WG AP Government
- WG AP Chemistry
- WG Scientific Research
- WG Calculus 2/3 (community college)
- Orchestra
- Study Hall (required with calc 2/3)
I’m especially worried about AP English since I got a B last semester, although I had a teacher who was a harsh grader and I was sick a lot and had surgery so I couldn’t do the reading. Do you guys, especially those who have taken AP English, think this will be too much? Thanks in advance.
Why did you not take Spanish 3?
That’s the real issue I see with your schedule. You’ll severely limit your college options if you don’t have at least 3 years of a single foreign language.
I wanted to take more science classes instead. I talked to my gifted couselor and she said that it would be ok. I’m not interested in any schools that require 3 years of foreign language. If I can’t get into college because I can’t tell you how to make a sandwhich in spanish, I don’t want to go there. Besides I can self teach spanish a lot easier than physics or calculus
I second that you need to take Spanish. Even if the college’s you are intrested in don’t ‘require’ it, you are going to be fighting an uphill battle. If you really don’t want to go to a school that wants it, all the power to you. Just be prepared to have your options severly limited.
I don’t have anywhere to put it and I didn’t take it last year, so I don’t know if there is anything I can do at this point.
I agree that you have good grades so far but not taking Spanish 3 will severely limit your college choices. Drop WG AP Government and save for Senior year. In HS, it does not matter that you are focusing on science/medically related courses. What is important, is getting into a good college where you can pursue an undergrad degree. For Medical school, you can major in anything as long as take the Medical School course requirements. You do not need a medical/science focus now.
my couselor said not to put off gov until senior year because it’s an 11 grade class at my school. And I disagree; it’s more important to me to learn than to get into college. If that keeps me out of some schools, fine. I live in Missouri, and I know Mizzou and UMKC won’t care. Washu doesn’t necessarily require foreign language, although I know it does help to have taken at least three years. Can I get some advice about the classes I’ve chosen, not spanish? This would be more helpful. Thanks though for the imput
Also I can take spanish at a community college over the summer if necessary
Yes, taking Spanish at a CC would be an option. Here is my 2 cents worth on your schedule then, with Spanish not a consideration. You are the only person that knows your capabilities and limitations. Your schedule has 4 AP classes (including DE). You have shown you able to handle 3 AP classes Sophomore year so moving up to 4 should not be a problem. Calculus at a CC might be more work than AP so having that study hall will help. Regarding AP English Lit and Comp, if you think you can pull out at least a B in the course, then go for it. Just an FYI: Most colleges will only accept AP English Lit or AP Language and Comp towards an GE college requirement but not both. If you are unsure about English Lit, drop down a level and consider taking AP Lang Senior year. Good Luck.
Thanks for the advice. Problem with AP Lit is the next level down is something called 11 LA flex (supposed to mimic a college schedule), but you have to take at least 2 flex classes and I don’t have any others, so I think I’m kind of stuck. I don’t want to to take regular english- that seems to easy and would look bad going from honors to regular. Also, thanks for the warning about AP credits. I have checked the colleges I’m interested in to make sure they accept these credits.
too easy (annoying that I can’t edit)
I think you will be fine and if you continue doing well in these courses, you will be in a position to consider some more competitive schools and/or good chances for significant merit aid if you target the right schools.
Why can’t you take another flex class? If you could dropping to LAflex may be a good idea. On the other hand, if you love to read, AP Lit would be a good choice. Is AP English Language and composition not offered?
The schedule look ok as long as you take Spanish 2 over the summer at a CC (Spanish 1+2 HS = College Spanish1).
Keep in mind that you’re likely to have a foreign language for college graduation too AND that med schools view favorably those who can speak a foreign language spoken by immigrants and thus can understand their worldview, thus limiting all kinds of difficulties and costs for hospitals and making you a more efficient doctor (ie., Med schools don’t view as favorably those who can’t).
I can take flex government, but it’s a semester and I would rather take AP Gov. Also, I was planning on taking spanish in college.
Usually with AP English, juniors take AP English Language and Composition, and seniors take AP English Literature and Composition.
i don’t really know how this website works. apparently I did something wrong
