In other words, to switch out of French into AP Psych. The French program at her school is terrible, and having finished French 3, she has to take honors level French 4 because the lower level won't fit her schedule. She doesn't feel prepared nor interested, and wants to take Italian in college, as we have relatives there. And she's dying to take AP Psych

BU and NYU are the most selective schools she's interested in--guidance counselor is pushing her to keep French but to me it seems crazy when she really wants to challenge herself in a meaningful way and has finished French 3. We'll speak to GC this week and any thoughts would help. Thank you!

Tell her to stay with the AP psychology. She’s interested in the subject. It shows rigor in her transcript. And if the program at her school is not particularly strong in a subject, she could end up not doing well in French 4 honors.

We heard many stories that dropping that 4th year of a language would hurt D but it didn’t seem to at all, granted she was going into engineering but I still think dropping it for a more challenging class in her interest area would work just as well, especially if the only option is honors and she’s not passionate about doing that - it could be a year long battle in a year where battles aren’t needed. I think schools recognize that not all disticts are strong in languages. Could she take an intro to Italian through a local CC or online - that may show interest there as well but I don’t think that would be necessary for admissions, just if she was interested in starting it earlier.

My girls took the AP psych and dropped the foreign language (Spanish for them) after the third year. Three years of a language is fine for those schools (One of my girls applied and was accepted at BU). I would definitely let her take the AP Psych instead. Not only is it much more interesting but the AP designation with also help her overall GPA/class rank a bit.

Thank you so much, all-- wish I could take you with me to the GC but it definitely makes me feel more confident to have heard from you!
