My son is in his junior year and very interested in pursuing MT after graduation. We've tried to encourage him and help with summer programs and such over the years, but it seems like this summer will be the big one. He recently got some attention at the state thespian festival and among other things, got an offer for scholarship to Michigan Tech U, and an offer to attend the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts summer program with a small scholarship to offset some of the costs of the summer program.

While we're excited for him, I don't know anything about the school or their program aside from what is on their website. It does appear that their program focuses on film acting from the curriculum.

We'd love any suggestions or feedback about that program and advice in general. My son lives in Arkansas and spends his summers and other holidays with us in Chicago, so the Northwestern Cherubs program is one that I'm encouraging him to apply for.

You’re very welcome. You’ll find we’re a pretty supportive group, here! After you finish perusing the Summer Programs thread (or if you’re ADD like me, concurrently) you should check out this thread as well:

Btw… our D has heard that the Cherubs program at Northwestern is fantastic! She attended MPulse (at University of Michigan) which also is a great summer MT program, but one of her friends who was at MPulse with her did Cherubs the following summer and he fell madly in love with Northwestern (as did D during a summer campus tour). He subsequently applied ED and will be joining D at NU next fall.

Good luck in your search for summer programs, but consider yourselves fortunate to live so near to one of the very best!

Broadway Theatre Project (Florida) is still taking DVD auditions. Performing Arts Project (North Carolina) is still auditioning. Mpulse site shows they are still accepting DVDs.

Check out the Baldwin-Wallace College Music Theatre Overtures program. It is just one week, and it is a great way to find and get feedback on college audition material.

We live in the Chicago area and have known many kids who have gone to Cherubs – and they love it. It is an excellent and intensive program. My D is only a sophomore this year, but she has always known that the only program she wants to attend is Cherubs after her junior year.

I’ve always disliked the name “Cherubs” as it sounds demeaning – but I guess it’s a term of endearment used since the 1930s, and all the kids involved are exceptional enough that they apparently don’t mind what they’re called. ;-D

The MT National High School Institute (the “real” name) is a 7 week program and is apparently very professional and intense. D wishes she could have done it!

Is there already a college you son is considering for MT. It would be good if he takes a summer program in that school - it would provide him the “college feel” of living in the dorm, meeting/working with the faculty and maybe even preparing him for the audition.

BoCo has its Musical Theater Dance Intensive - it accepts video auditions, too. My D attended its first offering last year and she liked it a lot.
