Junior Year

Hello all,

I'm a raising Junior attending a private school and I pretty much have my heart set on MIT.

I would really love some advice on a few things, but first of all here are the classes I'm enrolled in:

AP World History
AP Physics C
AP English Language
CP French III (no honors available)
AP Art History
AP Economics
AP Psychology (1 semester, online course)
AP Calculus BC

If anyone has experience with any of these courses or has suggestions for other classes that I should take I would love to hear it. But I did choose every course listed for a reason and the entire schedule was thought out.

Also, I've been trying to look for some science, math and physics competitions or contests at the state or national level that I could participate in as well as some writing competitions.

(Science and writing have always been my two major passions)

I already know about the physics bowl, INTEL sci fair, Siemens, and plan on entering the Cal state science fair this year. I'm planning on taking the AMC 12, the SAT, and 5 SAT subject tests sometime this year (math ii, physics, french lang, world hist, literature).

If anyone knows of any other science/math/engineering/writing competitions I would love to find out about them.

Unfortunately, my freshman, sophomore ECs really aren't that great; I was a mock trial attorney, Link Crew Leader, tennis team member, and math honor society member during soph year and all of those seem kind of trivial now.

I would really, REALLY appreciate some advice regarding MIT and what they look for; I've been stalking their website for weeks but literary research can never compare to actual experience.

I know this is a really long/time consuming question and I'm sorry but I need help :/

bump…:(

bump again; I so pathetic and lonely help :(

bump aaaagaaain…help help help  :S :frowning: :D

what are you planning your major to be?
if engineering, which i assume, then no point in doing humantiy subject tests, stick with math and science and work on getting 800’s on both of them.

SAT or ACT, you should really aim for 2200 or 33. Make sure you become officers in everything you do at school. Make sure you have teachers that like you for recommendations (that screwed me over, all my teachers hate me).

all the ap’s will be pretty easy. physics will be hard but thats it pretty much. Some sort of internship at a tech company would also make you really stand out.

good luck

Thanks for answering! I think my top choice is to major in physics with electrical engineering and either minor or duel major with literature

honestly, I believe you’re trying to do waay too much. You may not think that at all, but colleges want a well-rounded CLASS, not a well-rounded PERSON. If you focus your classes, ECs, and other specialities on one topic- like your interest in engineering- and work around that for your apps and stuff, then you’ll have a much better shot for your dream college. Also, one of my friends goes to MIT, and he got a 33 on his ACT. You’ll be safe with a 33+.

Also, go outside of your school for engineering opportunities. Find some internships, and look into MIT’s summer programs. You’ll build your apps that way.

Be sure to keep your GPA high. With your courseload, it’ll be difficult, but that’s the sacrifice you make for your future.

If you’d like to, get a job this year. Colleges love to see a student who can get the As, participate in the ECs, and work as a student. It improves your likability, and shows how hard you work.

Best of luck, and hope this helps!

Thank you so much! Yes, I want to get a job at my local Kumon tutoring center this year. As far as science goes, my number one passion is physics. Writing and science sort of go hand in hand with me and both are essential to my interests and passions, but I totally understand what you’re trying to say about well-rounded class. hmm, I’ll take it into consideration for sure.
