Junior's Chances for Rice, Brown, Carleton!

Some of these stats are likely predictions for senior year when I apply.

Personal
Kansas, Male
Asian-American, upper-middle class
Competitive public high school (sends grads to top schools every year)
Prospective majors: double major in Philosophy and Cognitive Science/Psychology; these are my passions in academics, especially philosophy (my IB Extended Essay is about philosophical zombies). Also, I don't imagine that there are many Asians dying to get philosohy degrees.
Prospective career: Superhero

Academics
UW GPA: ~3.7, W GPA: ~4.49
Rank: ~25/490, Top 5-6% (I feel like my GPA/class rank are the weakest part of my app)
Full IB Diploma Candidate, get mostly As with some Bs
SAT: 800 CR, 780 M, 690 W: Composite: 2270 (I'm sure I can break 2300)
ACT: 33 (might go up to 34)
Haven't taken APs/SAT IIs yet

100-150 hours of community service, a lot from random things, a lot from recycling. I'll probably do a lot of volunteering this summer.

I don't know if all of these should be put on an app (like bodybuilding), but they're what I enjoy and spend a lot of my time doing. There are some other ECs that I do/have done, but they aren't that significant.

Awards:
Academic Worldquest Competition (sponsored by International Relations Council) 30th place Nationals
All-District Honors Orchestra (will likely make State next year, after applying)
Orchestra Letter
Philosophy Paper (about zombies!) published in a peer journal

Subjective:
Essays: I imagine they'll be funny, offbeat, and hopefully well written. I also plan to show a lot of interest in my top choices and how I can contribute to the community. I think I can make this one of the stronger areas of my app.
Recs: I'll have a great one from my TOK teacher, probably decent-good from other teachers/counselor

Schools I plan on applying to:
Rice [1st]
Brown [1st]
Carleton [3rd]
Washington University at St. Louis
Pomona
Tufts
Claremont McKenna
Macalester
St. Olaf
American

I'm hoping those last 3 can be relative safeties.

I think you definitely have a chance at your first choices.

Go for it!

I can accept you, but how much experience do you have with biological copulation? I feel that citing such experiences may improve your portfolio and increase your chances into getting accepted to your first choices.

My take on your list... order of ratings: unlikely reach, reach, semi-reach, good fit, likely, safety.

Rice... SEMI-REACH.
Brown... REACH.
Carleton... GOOD FIT.
Washington University at St. Louis... SEMI-REACH.
Pomona... SEMI-REACH.
Tufts... GOOD FIT.
Claremont McKenna... GOOD FIT.
Macalester... LIKELY.
St. Olaf... SAFETY.
American... SAFETY.

I know a person on CC by the name of Toastwomble. Any relation? Are you his twin or something?

I second littleathiest's predictions but I think if your essays are very good Brown will be a semi-reach. You'll be fine next year so don't worry so much!

Good Luck,
Karen

No chance at any of them. I think Community College might be a good bet for you though. Becoming a Superhero is tough and very few succeed (trust me, I know firsthand).

Sorry.

I would stress the extra curriculars you've been most involved with (in terms of years and time)

I would say that the top 4 or 5 are either reach or semi-reach. A lot of it will be determined by the admission officers and "if you'll fit into the college community." I'm definitely sure you'll make the other ones; keep them as safety colleges. You might even get great merit scholarship offers.

It would be extremely helpful if someone could help me in determining my chances for Yale and some other colleges. Here is my thread link:

Thank you so much

Rice: somewhat a reach
Brown: reach
Carleton: match
Washington University at St. Louis: high match
Pomona: low reach
Tufts: high match
Claremont McKenna: match to high match
Macalester: very low match
St. Olaf: safety
American: safety

Thanks for the replies so far.

Bump.

Any more? (10 char)

I would focus for the next several weeks on hw, finals and papers to try to nab one more A. If you can stay above 3.8 in a strong IB/AP program next semester, personally I would say probably a reasonable match at Rice.

Since your SAT score parallels a PSAT score well above Kansas' cutoff for National Merit Semifinalist, you might be aware that Rice has historically been very NMF friendly. The natural admissions question arising from your stats is your commitment and drive to perform in the more intense academic environments such as Brown, Carleton and Rice. The committees at highly competitive colleges are likely to be looking very hard at your performance this semester and next to decide about you. You'll win more coin tosses at 3.8+ this semester and senior fall semester. Good scores need to keep slightly better company. Good luck.
