Hi! I really want to get in to PLME, and I think I have a decent shot–I’ve worked my butt off throughout high school. Everyone on CC seems so intelligent, it’s intimidating! Lol. But anyways, here are my “stats”.

I’m in the IB diploma program with the most challenging course load for all four years. My high school is in the Newsweek Top 300, so it’s moderately competitive. By the way, I’m white and female and Jewish.

Stats:
currently ranked 2/580
freshman year-4.0 unweighted, 4.68 weighted
sophomore year-3.9 unweighted, 4.52 weighted
junior year-3.95 unweighted, 4.68 weighted

SATS: 800math, 780reading, 760writing=2340 total
SAT IIs: MathIIC 780, US History 760, Chemistry 740

Projected IB diploma score of 41 (eek! i’m going for at least a 43)

EC’s seperated by focus areas:
Language:
- 7 years of Spanish
- 4 years of Hebrew taken through U of M College-in-the-Schools, total of 24 credits
- 3 years flvs.net online Latin class
- Member of Language Club freshman-senior years

Leadership:
- Student council treasurer this year
- Student school board representative this year
- President of synagogue youth organization
- On school board as a junior
- Founded a school Ping-Pong club in 10th grade

Volunteering/business initiative:
- Over 1,000 documented C.S. hours at a hospital
- Tutors elementary schools kids in Hebrew for 15/hr. twice weekly
- Started a business selling reusable flashcards that has made thousands of dollars over the last couple years
- Started a community vegetable garden, I deliver vegetables to residents the area for a nominal fee, 3 years now
- Took a 1 month community service trip to Jamaica between sophomore/junior years

Awards:
- Various regional/state writing contests
- Attended National History Day in 10th, placed 18th in country
- Won best handwriting in school 2 years in a row

I don’t have much of a “focus area”, but my business takes up a lot of my time. I’m trying to go non-profit and donate the proceeds to a poor community in Jamaica (the same one I visited last summer). Hopefully that can happen before college admissions time, but I’m not sure.

… well that about sums up the past three years of my life. If it matters, I plan on going into psychiatry.

thanks for any responses

OMG, AMAZING stats. Gorgeous SAT scores and rank, unique ECs (the National History Day and business are impressive), and 1,000 volunteer hours? Wow. Plus it appears you have good writing skills, and the essays are very important. I'm pretty sure you'll get into PLME.

Haha...PLME.
When a program excepts that few students, it comes down to being EXTREMELY qualified plus a TON of luck.

And the 740 on Chem won't look good for PLME. Chem and Bio scores (which ever you have), tend to be important for med programs.

And it also seems that you are more about academics than anything else.

Just write good essays and see where that takes you.

You will get into really elite schools...but PLME is extremely hard to get into regardless of stats. As of now you have a shot as good as nearly anyone else's but that doesn't mean an acceptance. You've worked hard and Congrats!

Um, a 740 SAT II Chemistry score probably wouldn't be considered a weakness, even on the PLME level... anything 700+ on an SAT II would definitely not be counted against you.

If the OP were rejected/waitlisted, that 740 certainly would not be to blame.

what might hurt is research, you did a lot of community service in the hospital but I don't think that counts as science "research", aka intel or finding a cure for cancer.

but with those scores/ec's i think you'll get accepted into brown regardless, maybe not PLME, but still.

I actually don't think not having research will hurt the OP b/c she's done so many other things. In a pool of about 2,000 applicants there will probably be several 2300+ scorers with research experience but their ECs wouldn't be as unique.

it's a little odd seeing your EC's seperated by areas of focus in languages...since you said you were aiming for PLME i expected to see math and science related activities..
My brother is in PLME and i wasn't surprised when the letter came. His stats are/were pretty impressive, esp. in the science area.
Like everyone's been saying, nobody really has a definite shot at PLME unless he or she has won Siemons or made perfect 800's on Chem, Math, etc.
Write some really great essays (my brother's were extremely good) and try to make a 43 on the IB diploma score. That's what I'll be doing anyways next year...lol.

some ppl that don't seem qualified enough get in. I dont wanna sound mean, but I think it's the truth. No one can predict your chance.

columbiaplease-- One of the reasons I don't have many math/science ECs is because my longterm goal is to become a psychiatrist, which is a little more psychology/humanities oriented than other medical fields. but thanks for the tips :)

haha, founding a ping-pong team is pretty sweet...you have great ECs (and stats!), although like the other posters said, a little more scientific background would have boosted you. But not having that certainly won't detract from what you've already done. If you want to be a psychiatrist, make sure to stress that in your essays. This is just my opinion b/c the only thing I've done with psych/psychiatry-ish is take AP Psych, but would it still have been possible for you to help out with a scientific study? And of your 1000 hrs, were any of those in the psychiatric facilities?

Good luck!
