Just a couple of questions about addmision

I am a junior in a private college prep school in nj.
My acumalitve GPA is 2.8 but that is due to a bad freshman year, last year my GPA was a 3.5 and the end of the year and this year for the first marking period i got a 3.0 and i hope to end up with around a 3.5 again this year. My freshman GPA was a low 2.somthing (i forget what it was).
I just took the PSAT and got a 1570 out of 2400.
My school does not rank students.
Im taking all main stream courses but I might be able to take AP Bio next year
I am an active member in about 5 school clubs.

Here are my question:

 1. Do I have a good shot at getting accepted if I was able to finish with around a 3.5 GPA this year
 2. Is there anyone that you might now that has been accpted with a similiar record as mine.
 3. My dad is good friends with the President of my school and with a few other high ranking people in the addministration and I will likely ask them to write my letters of recomendation, does it look good that the President of my school wrote me a letter?
 4. What is the lowest GPA that you have seen accepted to BU that did not have a conection to the head of addmision or had a relative working at the school.
 5. What type of resume would be stronge enough to get someone into BU? (obvioulsy all AP and perfect SAT’s would be the best, but from looking at my info a the top of the post, what are some realalistic goals I could try to reach that would give me a really good chance at getting in.)

If anyone can answer any of these questions it would really help me alot.

P.S. - sorry about any typos im typing this pretty fast, lol

With that GPA and SAT, I think you should look into BU's College of General Studies (CGS). If you browse around the recent threads, it's been mentioned A LOT. It's basically a 2 year school within BU where you complete all your core classes and then transfer to what ever college you want for your remaining two years.

@ skinnyfists... thanx ill keep that in mind

@ skinnyfists, is it true though that a GPA that low doesnt look that bad since i was able to get a 3.5 last year and will prolly get around a 3.5 this year, i heard that colleges will look past a shaky first year if u get on track in soph and junior year

Well, it's definitely not a good thing...but they will appreciate the upward trend. I think as long as you can keep a 3.5 this year and first semester senior year, you'll be fine. Your SAT is still a little on the lowside, but perhaps it'll improve from psat to actualy sat. Which school are you looking at? The business school and communication school are much more competitive than arts and sciences.

Freshman year is discounted and some schools don't even consider it since many states run middle school through 9th grade.

BU likes to see that you have challenged yourself in high school and taken the most rigorous possible curriculum. If you've been enrolled in mainstream classes and your school offers several AP classes, it may work against you.

@ SkinnyFists...... i am prolly going to try and get into the arts and science b/c i am looking to be a pre-med major or some type of help profession.

Try the ACT if the SAT isn't giving you the results you want. I've never taken it, but it might help you out.

@ lavafrog, ya i'v been thinking about that, alot of the seniors i know have told me that it is much easier than the SAT, they said the queastions are not as tricky and more straight foward, does anyone know if that is true?

I took both. The reading/writing on the ACT is REALLY easy, the math is about the same, and I found the science to be difficult. Then again, science at my school was horrible.

The ACT is more knowledge based - do you know it or not? The SAT is "supposed" to measure your test taking ability.

PreMed is a brutal major at any school so be realistic. Pre Med programs are full of kids with over 4.0 GPAS and 2300 sats. Make sure you note the upward GPA trend and say something about focusing on your studies now. Can you prep/get tutored for the SAT or ACT? Based on BU SAT averages you are at the low end but thats just your PSAT so you could really do much better on the SAT. You may want to consider CGS which might be a good fit for you. It sounds like you may be in a tough HS so your GPA may be higher than it seems. Also, what is the class rigor? Did you not take Honors courses that were offered? If thats the case see if you can stretch yourself and get them in for your next semesters. Any interesting ECs? Check out JPOD's posts. He just got accepted ED. See post a few pgs ago on "Rule of thumb" chances data. It lists BU averages for regular 4 yr BU programs and also for CGS.

BTW fks, don't make my mistake, take the damn SAT II's, I had to apply CGS instead of SMG, but its for the best because I am really in the boat you are but I didn't get the luxary of a private school. I took all mainstream classes, but I pretty much Aced all of em, I just felt like being lazy in HS and now i'm paying. As for the sat's I did better than most people I know, but not great.

Another note, what part of Jersey you from? I'm down in Ocean County.
