Just a few basic questions about transfering from CC to UC

Well, I'm about to complete my first year (2nd semester) at a community college. I'm pretty much just following the IGETC and assist.org classes. Unfortunately I already have two W's :'( but when reading another thread I got the impression that they aren't too bad as long as the class is made up for/you don't get too many, in my case I am SURE that I will not get any more W's.

I guess my question is besides following the IGETC and assist.org requirements/getting the best possible GPA I can, what other things can I do to help my chances, such as what extracurriculars do you think would be helpful (I'm planning to major in business/economics).
My plan is to TAG to UCD and apply to a few others such as USB, USDC, and maybe a few more.

Thanks!

If you’re GPA is above a 3.5ish and you’re applying for a competitive, impacted major, I would say join a couple of clubs and do an honors program. Maybe even do some volunteer work. If you’re GPA isn’t that high, don’t bother and spend more time studying.

TAG only takes into consideration courses and GPA (PS. finish all you’re English and math requirements before or during Fall 2010 if you plan to transfer for Fall 2011… TAG purposes). As for the colleges you’re applying to UCD is a pretty easy TAG but I’m not sure what USB or USDC are. If you meant UCB, you’re effed unless you have close to a 4.0 and UCSD is a super easy TAG.

Any extracurriculars would be helpful. If you manage to score an internship or something that’s related to your major, kudos. Having a part-time job is also something you will benefit from.

@ lmendoza

Why is he screwed for UCB?

Didn’t mean to come off like a prick or anything but I just wanted to imply that it is very difficult to get accepted in Berkeley (even as a CC). I shouldn’t used ‘effed’ unless I am certain that he has a low GPA (I’m not making any assumptions but merely saying…). My apologies if I came off to strong.

Seems like the borderline for UCB security is 3.6ish. Anything lower, and you’ll be defying odds with an acceptance. That is presuming your applied major isn’t impacted.

Good Luck.

It is hard to get into Berkeley. However, an upward grade trend is important.

I had a 1.0 my first semester, and a 4.0 my last. Cum. GPA: 3.76

Yeah, I have a decent GPA for Berkeley, but had my GPA been a 3.5, I still think my trend would have gotten me in.

@ OP: Don’t be discouraged by 2 W’s. That is seriously nothing to worry about. Just focus on getting A’s and minimal B’s from now on. Your grade trend is a major consideration for Berkeley. Focus on improving from how you’ve started (unless you began with a 4.0), and you should have a good shot at Berkeley.

I have 5 w’s and got in to Berkeley. They dont matter much…if you can explain them.

I’d worry about major prereqs, GPA, and Igetc in that order.

Dont kill youself with extracurriculars either they dont seem to matter much. But DO something. Join a couple clubs and do some volunteer work.

Write a killer essay and you’ll be in!

All I have to say about the GPA thing. How many people have we seen with 4.0’s rejected because they DIDN’T HAVE THIER PREREQS FINISHED. Too many to count. And these people, you can tell they tried. more impressive stats than I, but you have to follow the rules of the system, be smart about things.
Another thing that burned people with good stats was applying to heavily impacted majors. Be smart about what major you choose, play the percentages.

Good luck
